Paladin Theatre Company

The Paladin Theatre Company was formed as an experiment, in the belief that the following are true:

(1.) Theatre can be accessible without appealing to the lowest common denominator.

(2.) There is a goldmine of 20th century American plays lying fallow at present which the public deserves to see.

(3.) Plays about Texas needn't take place in trailer parks or beauty parlors. Texas plays needn't have lead characters named Earl and Mavis. Nor should Texas plays purport as true regional language certain fabricated idioms of speech that would make the citizenry of this fair land cringe in disgust. Texas is a tapestry of varied cultures and topographies; it is a land of myth, history, and romance: Texans deserves a theatre that expresses these native treasures with pride and intelligence.

(4.) The words "classic" and "boring" do not have to be synonyms.

(5.) A community theatre should take the word "community" as seriously as it takes the word "theatre".

(6.) There is a large contingent of the public who actively avoid theatre, because they feel it is phony, dull, and elitist. They have fled the playhouses for their television sets. The Paladin Theatre Company believes that this situation is the failing of the theatrical community, not the public's.

We at the Paladin Theatre Company believe these things to be veritable holy writ. It is our aim to prove them true for even the most jaundiced and jaded naysayer. We will do it, too, one play at a time.

      Blessings monologue, first performed in 1999, has not lost any of it's timeliness. It is a tour de force for any actor; but Charles Stites, a veteran of the Austin stage, is delivering an outstanding performance - passionate, warmhearted and totally believable.       This play was engaging and funny, and was a tour de force by the performer, who is perhaps the best actor I have seen in Austin. He did an incredibly convincing job, through voice, glance, and gesture, of being a man in a dog's body. Plus, encapsulated within the play is the most compelling arguement for federal funding of the arts I have heard to date. Long live the NEA!!! Collapse

      One-man shows are not particularly easy to pull off- especially not in a way to make the story engaging to the audience. But Charles Stites, an Austin theatre veteran, does just that in his performance of Lee Blessing's "Chesapeake." He plays Kerr, a southern-born New York performer whose routines become the perfect fodder for rising Southern Senator Thurm Pooley to push for the de-funding of the NEA. Kerr has an encounter with Pooley's daughter, and tries to kidnap the family dog to attempt to get leverage over Pooley. This backfires and leads to a surprising plot twist, which I will not reveal here except to suggest that it involves dogs. The main factor that decides whether I enjoy a show is whether it tells a good story, and "Chesapeake" does that, and Stites is an excellent Story-Teller. In addition, it has the added bonuses of being timely in the midst of the political budget battles, and being in the intimate Hideout theatre. Go see this one. Collapse

      In a world where audiences are spoon fed high spectacle, it can be refreshing to come across a play that is character driven, and done so, by such gifted women. There is definitely no shortage on talent in this cast. The technical aspects don’t fully gel, and the staging is, at times, awkward; but the performances of the actors shine through, nonetheless. Keylee Paige Koop brings an immediate energy to the stage from the moment she enters. It is quickly returned in kind. Exchanges between Lindsley Howard and herself are captivating and truly in the moment. Ashley Spillers also stands out. She plays her often comical character with consistency and honesty helping to further create the world of the play. One wishes that attention to detail had been brought to other elements of the show. That said, the ability of this skilled cast to work as an ensemble and draw in the audience truly makes this a show worth seeing. Collapse

      Charles Stites and the Paladin Theatre Company have done the Austin theatre world a great service by putting on Early Girl. With the setting of a legal brothel in Nevada, the events begin with the arrival of Lily (Keylee Paige-Koop), a now-legal 18 year-old, looking to make enough money to go back to her home. The brothel is run by Lana, aptly played by Wendy Zaveleta, an older woman who is cold and calculating yet also sensitive to the problems of her girls. With prostitution, most of the public pictures only the sensational and lurid aspects, for perhaps obvious reasons. But Early Girl shows the real characters behind the scenes of prostitution, and the hidden stresses of the profession, such as petty rivalry, the work necessary to maintain a particular appearance, the dangers of some clients, and making enough money. Early Girl is a thoughtful, well-done production that deserves Austin's support. Collapse

      In its program, Paladin Theater Company makes a point of how this production is intended as a showcase for female actresses. In that regard, it does not disappoint, featuring a cast of smart actresses who bring an earthy realism, gentle humor, and pleasantly relaxed feel to their roles. They are at their best when the script and staging afford them intimacy with each other, huddled close on a couch or clustered around a love seat. However, I felt that the play often became diffuse, lost amidst the expanse of carpet and almost endless white walls. The drama, the tension, the need all slackened in the wide space and comfortable distance between actors. I felt myself wanting more teeth in the drama, it was almost there, but got washed out. But if you want to see some talented women with meaty, well-written roles, Early Girl might be a pleasant (perhaps too much so) way to spend an evening. Collapse
