Sustainable Theatre Project

Founded in 2009, Sustainable Theatre Project is a nonprofit collaborative ensemble with the mission to create entertaining, affordable and socially relevant theatre for the city of Austin, while maintaining the highest possible standards of sustainability as budget and all practical means allow. STP seeks to produce a wide diversity of theatrical genres steeped in fine-tuned dedication to quality and excellence. STP's foundational belief is that environmentally sustainable practice creates potential for an extreme efficiency that in turn leads to organizational sustainability, offering greater pay to artists, increased production quality and lower ticket prices. STP seeks to address the wasteful habits of the theatre and works toward opening a new zero waste theatre venue for all the established and emerging theatre companies in Austin and their audiences to call home. We believe that a respect for the environment, the earth, our home, is the highest gesture of respect to the human being. We believe the vitality of the art of theatre can be strengthened and cemented by applying sustainable practices. Our commitment to artistic excellence is equal to our commitment to sustainable practices.

      I went through the door and loved every minute of it. Superb acting with just enough realism mixed in to balance out the vaudevillian style. I wonder if the room temperature in the second act was a choice. Future audience take note: wear shorts/short sleeves. Amazing, inventive use of space. This company could turn any place into a theatre. I'm excited and curious to see where they put up their next show. Seller Door proved to be a superior night of theatre. Collapse

      Part of Sustainable Theatre Project's mission is re-imagining how we produce art, so it's no surprise to see them thinking outside the box. Here, the "box" is a traditional venue. Seller Door opens in a retail space that's been cleverly converted for the event. The highest compliment I can give is that their setup is so clean, fitting to the play and functional that I didn't even notice it. Instead, I was charmed by Larry Mitchell's original script. Mitchell is an intelligent playwright, capable of playing with form and tossing out big ideas for the audience to consider, yet with an absurdist humor that doesn't allow the play to feel heavy-handed (except at the very end). Derek Kolluri carries the first act with delightful ease. His castmates are less strong, but their energy, aided by the play's buoyancy and tight direction, keep the performance fun and light. For me, the second act (only 20 minutes) ends too abruptly, but overall Seller Door's a fun night with smart artists. Collapse

      If you enjoy theatre that takes you out of your comfort zone, check out Seller Door. From the close acting spaces, to the relocation of the audience for the second act and some audience participation, it's a great experience for those wanting to see a show off the beaten path. I saw it on opening night and there was a wonderful atmosphere of enthusiasm from both the actors and extremely helpful house manager and staff. I've never wanted to go through a door so badly!
