An organic theater troupe birthed from a faith community now offers three shows a year in their intimate black box theater. Art in the heart of Austin, it doesn’t get much better than Trinity Street Players. Join us in the audience or on stage as local actors take us into a whole new world of drama, laughter, tears and a little suspense, after all… all the world’s a stage!

      Very much enjoyed this musical as did the couple of friends who joined me. The performers have wonderful singing voices especially Ann Pitmann (beautiful) and Jim Lindsey in leading roles as well as Steve Williams. The acting of the above and the others, such as Evelyn LaLonde and Sarah Zeringue seemed almost effortless though much work went into these roles. Everyone embodied their characters, sweeping the audience into the story and making us believe the characters and feel the emotions. David Blackburn's musical direction and piano playing soars where needed and reduces to soft complementing sounds at other times. The songs are haunting and beautiful. The theater is small, the set simple, and the sound good, which resulted in a great experience. I'd never seen a production by the Trinity Street Players, but will certainly attend again. Collapse

      Attention jaded Austin theater- goers: I see a lot of plays in this town and am rarely moved by a script or performance, emotionally speaking. In fact, I would say that it generally makes me uncomfortable in the rare instances when a play has pushed me to actually feel some thing genuine and out of my control. If this describes you STAY AWAY FROM PROOF. Between Bridget F. and Gary C. you will not escape the evening without tearing up. The entire ensemble handles this script with such deft hands that I am amazed at the donations-only policy- this is the level of acting I expect to see at a premium price only. Kudos to McCullars- I will watch anything he directs... but cautiously, as I am now armed and guarding my emotional response with razor wire and land mines. Allergies, cold, something-in-my- eye, monitor fatigue... excuses loaded and ready. Collapse

      It is rare to see a production so finely tuned and expertly performed. This was my first time seeing a show in the Trinity Street Players black box theatre, and I admit being somewhat skeptical. But from the first moment I set eyes on the wonderful set I knew I was going to be in for a treat. The four-person cast of this show is simply spot-on. Circe Sturm nails Claire in a way that is both humanizing and deliciously vile. Gary Clarke doesn't miss a beat playing the crazy, genius father. I enjoyed every moment he was on stage. David McCullars completely embodied Hal and gave geeks all around a new hero. And Bridget Farias captured Catherine's complexity and dimension in ways that gave Mary Louise Parker a run for her money. Light design was perfectly simple and well executed with great attention to detail. I was also pleasantly surprised by the clever use of music to enhance each scene. Wonderful selections.       This is by far the best play I have seen in Austin ever, and I go to 90% of them. The cast is excellent, the plot is thought-provoking, and the ending is unbelievably moving.

      Incident at Vichy is an entertaining and thought-provoking one-act play about a group of people that have been detained by Nazis in the Vichy area of France during World War II. There are no heroes and few villains. The audience is asked to consider each character's complicity in the war from their individual perspectives. It is a wonderful addition to the Austin repertoire.       Part of the appeal of The Fantasticks is the simplicity of its concept. Boy and girl fall in love; their fathers pretend to oppose the match and hire "El Gallo," a bandit and merchant of dreams to give the boy his chance to be a hero. Romance triumphs but gives way to unease. In the second act the boy ventures forth to explore the cruel world while the girl dallies with the mendacious El Gallo. An eventual happy ending is tinged with the melancholy feel that life is more earnest and more difficult that the dreams of romance. This action is wrapped in tunes that have become key in the musical theatre canon: Try to Remember, Soon It's Gonna Rain, and I Can See It, to name only the most evident.       Don't miss "The Fantasticks"! I'd never seen a production at First Baptist Church's Black Box Theatre, but it's a fantastic venue since you feel like you are part of the show. There's not a bad seat in the house, and it makes the excellent acting that much better when you can see it up close and personal. A perfect way to spend the evening, and it definitely fits in the budget. CONGRATS on a great show! Collapse
