ABOUT PENFOLD THEATRE COMPANY

 

Penfold Theatre Company is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to opening and operating a professional theatre in the north Austin-Round Rock metro area. It is the only professional theatre specifically dedicated to serving the over 350,000 residents in north Austin, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Georgetown and Leander.

 

In its first two seasons, Penfold produced four plays ('Art', The Last Five Years, Three Days of Rain and John & Jen) that collected 23 local award nominations and received Austin Critics Table Awards in categories like Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role, Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Musical. In 2010-11 the company is producing its third and largest season to date, featuring three mainstage productions and new
education programs.

      Stayed in Austin and found your show on internet. My wife and I were greatly pleased with the experience. The acting and singing were wonderful. We are TCM classic buffs. Several times during the performance we had to remind ourselves this was a live show. We felt like we were watching a good movie on TCM. Thank you. Everyone was superb but we found the actor who played the pastor especially awesome. Collapse

      If you want a fun, live alternative to the movie we all watch every Christmas, go to Friar Tuck’s pantry in Round Rock. Penfold has put together a fine show with a talented cast that captures the movie with a wink to the radio shows of yore. Judd Farris strikes a good balance as George – wisely choosing not to mimic Jimmy Stewart but keeping his goofy charm. Alan Blyton delivers a wide range of voices in perfect American accents (he’s from the UK) and Claire Ludwig is spot on in various roles, really capturing the 1940’s spirit. It’s cool to see how the sound effects are created and the commercial intervals were a fun break from the show (although I wished there were more of both). The pace is delivered in a slightly quicker tempo to mimic a live radio show, so emotional moments are not left to linger. However, you will come away feeling the nostalgia, a few tears, and the community spirit that the holiday season invokes. A timeless classic that is still, if not more, relevant today. Collapse

      Penfold Theatre Company has crafted a delightful staged version of the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life," presenting it as a live radio drama complete with Foley sound effects and actors speaking into microphones on the set. Since the story is so well-known, this particular production could have easily been flat, but it wasn't. Rather, the director and the actors bring the characters and story to life with vibrancy and energy. Judd Farris portrays George Bailey with grace, and Eden Blattner is remarkably nuanced in her portrayal of Mary Hatch. The supporting cast is similarly strong, particularly the Texas radio veteran David Jarrott. Friar Tuck's Pantry in Round Rock is an unlikely, but ultimately ideal location for this production, with its cozy small- town feel; yet, there's ample enough room for the actors to set up. The costumes I was also very impressed with, as all the actors were very convincing in their 1940s attire. Collapse

      If you want to have the feel of small town America for seeing a Christmas classic like It's a Wonderful Life...a Live Radio Play's setting of downtown Round Rock inside the Friar Tuck's Pantry is the way to go. They don't have any coffee during show but that is the only disappointment. I imagine most people have heard or seen the film version with Jimmy Stewart and many other fine cast. This cast which provides the sound effects and for many a multitude of changing characters is truly special to see. One of the actresses, Claire Ludwig will have the facial and sound expression of Violet (the town flirt) and then change straight being the mother of the main character George or one of his daughters. It is truly priceless. Judd Farris is such a good match for George. His strong sense of character and excellent acting has always been fun to watch and you find yourself easily rooting for him. Eden plays a good Mary, George's love and eventual wife. David Jarrott and Alan Blyton also shine. Collapse

Get on down to Hyde Park Theatre and see this absolutely delightful romantic comedy pulled off by an obviously devoted and talented cast. If you are in love or thinking about it, this show will help you ask some important questions along the way. Great singing, great comic timing and full of tender moments as well. You can't lose.       I love this show because it has a cute story, very funny lines, great songs, wonderful use of stage/sets, and strong performances by all cast members. Musicals aren't my usually preference - why sing it when you can say it - BUTT, I truly enjoyed all the songs in I Love You Because. The cast members were delightful. All put forth excellent performances. You don't get a full standing ovation for nothing! I've been spreading the word about this show - it's a MUST SEE. Get your ticket while you still can.       This show is one of those rare marriages of book and score that works on every level and it is nothing less than pure enchantment. The girls are adorable, the guys are hilarious, and all are perfectly cast. The musicians are brilliant, the direction is stellar and the clever set takes us straight to NY. The costumes, light design and sound are first-rate. A great deal of love is put into this production. We love live theatre because it often offers up subject matter we perhaps haven't considered before. But sometimes we simply wish to be entertained, and boy does this show deliver. The audience was enthralled and just had to stand and cheer for these artists. It's hard to say who had more fun - the audience or the artists, and when the two groups merge as they did last night it is of course pure magic. Penfield Theatre Company takes no prisoners, holds nothing back. Go see this show and you WILL want to see it again... And again... And again... It's that good! Collapse

      I saw the opening night production of Going With Jenny and had a wonderful time. The creative and design elements were great, especially given the space they were working in. The acting was exquisite. The direction and staging was smart, sensitive and lured me into the play in such a meaningful way making the world of the story much more accessible to me. The play captured some common life struggles in marriage and although the writing was a bit simpler than I prefer the production team and actors so made up for it that I still walked away thinking and reliving the play days after seeing it.       I enjoyed Penfold's "Three Days of Rain" and "John & Jen" and wanted to see their new work at the Round Rock library. Penfold's production team transformed a large conference room into an intimate performance space with a simple, realistic apartment set. Performed by skilled actors Molly Fonesca and Nathan Jerkins, the play deals with a 7-year marriage at a crossroads. Neither spouse is content, and instead of talking to each other, they confide in the audience through alternating monologues about how their rural Christian upbringing and limited relationship/sexual experience affected their development and maturation (or lack of maturity, in the case of the husband). Some of the monologues are fresh and funny; others seem to be trying too hard to amuse. The script might benefit from fewer childhood stories and more about the marriage itself. The 2 scenes in which the couple does interact are intense and satisfying. (Young actors: the play is a good source for audition monologues.) Collapse
