Alamo Drafthouse

For over 10 years, The Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas has provided a unique combination of theatre and restaurant, showing first-run and independent films while offering in-theatre food and beverage service that includes an extensive menu of freshly prepared appetizers, sandwiches, pizzas and salads as well as a wide selection of hand-crafted beers and great wines. We are the only concept in the growing cinema-eatery category that is franchising.

The typical Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has four to ten screens that resemble traditional movie theatres except rows of seats alternate with bench-style tables. Individual theatre seating ranges from 75 to 320 seats. First-come, first-serve seating begins approximately 45 minutes prior to show time. Customers are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the pre-show entertainment. Instead of a barrage of advertising, a variety of short films are shown that change on a regular basis, some with tie-ins to the feature film.

“We're proud of the fact that we don't show any advertising,” President and CEO John Martin said. “People don't want to pay for a movie and then be bombarded with 15 minutes of dancing candy and fountain drinks.”

Once seated, customers order from the menu and the friendly wait staff brings the food to their seats. Customers can continue to order throughout the movie by writing their requests using the paper and pencils on their table and placing it on the clips attached to the table. Waiters quietly collect and deliver those orders without distracting from the movie. All tabs are closed before the film ends.

      The scope and power of this show are beyond words. As a Poe fan, I was blown away--while the character is still a slightly romanticized version of the writer and poet, it is not the melancholy character that many believed him to be, rather it is perhaps the truest depiction of Poe the man I have yet to see. An outgoing, snide, passionate man, struggling with severe alcoholism while creating some of the greatest works in the English language. Jeffrey Combs' performance is doubly impressive--the tone of the piece set early on with the only light to start with being that of a candle--as you are quickly immersed in his performance of the author, an act he carries with the utmost of believability, that is only exemplified when he recites Poe's works, Combs as Poe becomes the characters of the stories or poems, whether it be the lover in his poetry, raving like a madman as the unreliable narrator of "Tell-Tale," and harboring the terror of the lamentable narrator of the Raven.       I was given a rare and wonderful treat at the Alamo Draft House last night that I wish one and all could see. I had never seen a play before at the Drafthouse and don't know if the theatre had ever done one. The play was the one man show of Nevermore. Dennis Paoli wrote the play, using a compilation of historical accounts, actual monologues, articles, letters and Poe's own words to put together the perfect picture of American's most famous macabre author and poet. The play ran for months in Los Angeles and received unanimously glowing reviews. I was so hoping that it would come to Austin and luckily it did. Fantastic Fest was the reason that there was this show and I am certainly glad for that. Jeffrey Combs who has always brought something interesting to the screen for his roles brought out the sadness, regret, brilliance, and humor of Poe. You so felt that he was Poe and that everything from being drunken to sorrowfully telling of his lost love that it was in the moment. Tonight and tomorrow 10/1 and 10/2 are the last of the performances. I only regret that I did not get to tell Mr. Combs what I thought of his performance but believe that it was so much in the moment I would have thanked Mr. Poe for finally having the opportunity to meet him.
