The City Theatre Company is a performing arts organization whose purpose is to enlighten, enhance, and enrich the Austin community by providing superior theatrical experiences unsurpassed in the area and beyond. They are committed to developing local theatre artists, providing outreach to educational and community organizations, as well as, creating a center for arts and ideas. It is City Theatre Co.'s ultimate intent to entertain, thereby stimulating artistic and economic growth in the city. However, through endeavors they continually strive to make Austin a more aware, responsive, and compassionate community.

      Being sent to the hospital for much needed treatment, but not expected to recover. The new production has many unhealthy aspects – and makes humor of them. It’s warm, in a stranger kind of way that really is hard to deal with and makes one think of doctor – patient relationships. And author – audience as well. The director is to be congratulated on getting these awkward pieces put together in an effective way. The cast does bring the drama home to us. So this works as a piece of theater. This was especially hard for me to watch, since my mother refused chemotherapy having just lost her boyfriend to cancer, the hard way. (She survived and is still tutoring at 84.) And having dated a transplant recipient who spent an entire year in a teaching hospital, I know far too much about this subject. If you haven’t been through things like that, it will open your eyes. What they will think of our medical establishment in the future? This show is a good clue. Collapse

      I saw Wit opening weekend and it was beautifully done. A touching, emotional and sometime amusing play that is written so well. The entire cast did a wonderful job - bravo to Kristen Bennett and Vanessa Marie - and Judith Laird's lead performance as a uncompromising teacher battling ovarian cancer is a performance you do not want to miss. It is one of the best in Austin this year. Highly recommended! Collapse

      The work and words of this beautiful play never cease to amaze me aided by a fine and moving production that I saw this weekend. It is so refreshing to see intelligent and seasoned actors understanding what this play is all about including Tim Brown, Ben McLemore, Mick D’Arcy, Lindsay McKenna, Trevor Bissell and Kevin Gates who all brought to outstanding performances to the stage. But the performer of the night was Chelsea Bunn as the beautiful yet tragic leading lady. One of the best performances of Juliet I’ve ever seen. And hard-hitting, intense work from Wesley Riddle and cast on the fight choreography. This is one of Shakespeare’s finest done right by The City Theatre. Recommended! Collapse

      This is my favorite Shakespeare tragedy and I was delighted with the way the actors and director extracted every bit of comedy from the play. It has so many funny lines to counteract the tragic story, too often overlooked or underplayed, but not here. This cast delivers a great story with terrific timing and creative staging. The lessons here are timeless: the prices we pay for hatred, grudges, greed, vanity, etc, and how many lives are destroyed when we hold on to destructive, negative feelings. This is a morality play in my opinion and absolutely timeless. This production is very good and deserves to be seen. Collapse

      Two houses who like indignities? I’m happy to report that the three players from the Baron’s Men (we just did Henry V) seemed the most competent in their parts. It’s difficult to bring off a show that is so well known to the audience. There were some very nice parts to the evening and some surprises. Some indignities as well, but for the most part it was planned that way. As a vehicle for actor’s expression, plays are a living art form. And even when they are rough, pearls can be beautiful. So we must appreciate this living art without the big stage, fancy lighting and decorations. These plays weren’t written for those, and don’t always work in those settings. It was a time of brawling and blood. Hollywood makes it too pretty. This is a labor of love that wakes up to rude indignities. The harsh light of morning shows that too much that was meant has gone wrong. But we struggle on anyway. The play’s the thing & shows that many lack a conscience. Collapse

      In a town where you can see a Shakespeare play practically any time you'd like- R&J perhaps three times a year- you set your expectations fairly high. And, Austin, you have that luxury as long as productions like this one are about. Though there is some unevenness- sound, lighting, costume, and a few minor roles- the sharp, crisp delivery by the leads more than make up for it. Atop those performances by B.McClemore, K.Clark, G.Diehl, and T.Allen sits clear and away Kevin Gates as Mercutio; do not miss this amazing take on one of the best characters in the Bard's work. I would have paid twice to watch just the first half for this role only and anyone in town who misses it is robbing himself of an amazing acting treat. Collapse

      I do love "Wicked" and so maybe I have a penchant for plays that show an alternative view to a popular story. In this play, we have Santa's reindeer sharing their "behind the scenes" perspective of Santa and the new controversy that has arisen at the North Pole. I don't wish to reveal too much, and so I will let the story unfold for you like it did for me. The actors do a great job of sharing their perspectives with great emotional depth and provide us a glimpse of their personal stories. Did you know there are female reindeer on Santa's team? Which reindeer fell into a bad crowd as a teen-ager? Come to the show to lean all this and more. (Although Rudolph is mentioned, please be clear that this is NOT a child friendly show.) Collapse

      I really enjoy the City Theater as well as irreverent shows. I was expecting a dark comedy, a comedy with more humor. This show is a satire and is actually very current considering the events in the news today. The 8 reindeer each told tales of Bad Santa and his perversions (yes, more than one). Some lines in their stories were funny, but not enough for me to give this show more stars (though I really wanted to be able to do so). Too many of the reindeer were stereotypical characters with stereotypical speeches and mannerisms/acts, such as militant macho, gay,militant feminist, ditsy, etc. The most real reindeer and best actor was Andy Brown who aptly portrayed a sad Donner (Rudolph's father). If you are tired of fluffy Christmas shows, go enjoy an eve of wicked subversion and watch out because Santa knows when you are sleeping. Collapse

      If you are looking for something ENTIRELY different from the usual Scrooges and Nutcrackers, then this show is it. Santa has gotten caught in Sandusky-esque fasion and all the reindeer must come forward with what they know each having own individual story of cover-ups, blackmail, sex and greed. Yeah, not for the young ones but oh, so very funny and creativly written and acted. It was something so completely different for the holiday - performing after hours as well - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will never watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer the same way again.       I am so happy that I didn’t miss the opening weekend of The Miracle Worker. What a beautiful, powerful, funny and inspiring production! Monique Borses and Dawn Erin are outstanding in the lead roles of Helen and Annie – I would be surprised if they didn’t receive Austin award nominations for their amazing work especially in the memorable breakfast table scene. So well done! And bravo to Kim Rubin, Michael Miller and Gabriel Diehl who had wonderful performances as the Keller family. The entire cast did an incredible job. Congratulations to director Andy Berkovsky who staged a beautiful show with a marvelous set - complete with working water pump, perfect period costumes and very creative staging. It was a journey. There is a reason that the story of Helen Keller and this play still find so much truth today. It reveals the importance of family, the power of determination and the ability to do amazing things no matter what the obstacles are. I highly recommend the show to anyone. Collapse
