The City Theatre Company

The City Theatre Company is a performing arts organization whose purpose is to enlighten, enhance, and enrich the Austin community by providing superior theatrical experiences unsurpassed in the area and beyond. They are committed to developing local theatre artists, providing outreach to educational and community organizations, as well as, creating a center for arts and ideas. It is City Theatre Co.'s ultimate intent to entertain, thereby stimulating artistic and economic growth in the city. However, through endeavors they continually strive to make Austin a more aware, responsive, and compassionate community.

      I do love "Wicked" and so maybe I have a penchant for plays that show an alternative view to a popular story. In this play, we have Santa's reindeer sharing their "behind the scenes" perspective of Santa and the new controversy that has arisen at the North Pole. I don't wish to reveal too much, and so I will let the story unfold for you like it did for me. The actors do a great job of sharing their perspectives with great emotional depth and provide us a glimpse of their personal stories. Did you know there are female reindeer on Santa's team? Which reindeer fell into a bad crowd as a teen-ager? Come to the show to lean all this and more. (Although Rudolph is mentioned, please be clear that this is NOT a child friendly show.) Collapse

      I really enjoy the City Theater as well as irreverent shows. I was expecting a dark comedy, a comedy with more humor. This show is a satire and is actually very current considering the events in the news today. The 8 reindeer each told tales of Bad Santa and his perversions (yes, more than one). Some lines in their stories were funny, but not enough for me to give this show more stars (though I really wanted to be able to do so). Too many of the reindeer were stereotypical characters with stereotypical speeches and mannerisms/acts, such as militant macho, gay,militant feminist, ditsy, etc. The most real reindeer and best actor was Andy Brown who aptly portrayed a sad Donner (Rudolph's father). If you are tired of fluffy Christmas shows, go enjoy an eve of wicked subversion and watch out because Santa knows when you are sleeping. Collapse

      If you are looking for something ENTIRELY different from the usual Scrooges and Nutcrackers, then this show is it. Santa has gotten caught in Sandusky-esque fasion and all the reindeer must come forward with what they know each having own individual story of cover-ups, blackmail, sex and greed. Yeah, not for the young ones but oh, so very funny and creativly written and acted. It was something so completely different for the holiday - performing after hours as well - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will never watch Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer the same way again.       I am so happy that I didn’t miss the opening weekend of The Miracle Worker. What a beautiful, powerful, funny and inspiring production! Monique Borses and Dawn Erin are outstanding in the lead roles of Helen and Annie – I would be surprised if they didn’t receive Austin award nominations for their amazing work especially in the memorable breakfast table scene. So well done! And bravo to Kim Rubin, Michael Miller and Gabriel Diehl who had wonderful performances as the Keller family. The entire cast did an incredible job. Congratulations to director Andy Berkovsky who staged a beautiful show with a marvelous set - complete with working water pump, perfect period costumes and very creative staging. It was a journey. There is a reason that the story of Helen Keller and this play still find so much truth today. It reveals the importance of family, the power of determination and the ability to do amazing things no matter what the obstacles are. I highly recommend the show to anyone. Collapse

      Rumors is a comedy about four couples going to a 10th year wedding anniversary party. When they arrive they find out that the host has shot himself and his wife is no where to be seen and that is when the rumors start. This play has a wonderful cast that makes the play very enjoyable. An outstanding performance by Rachel McGinnis as the suspicious wife who believes her husband has been having an affair. She is very convincing as the betrayed wife. Wendy Zavaleta has wonderful comic timing and delivers her lines with great ease. The set consists of many doors in which the actors enter and exit thru out the play. The set seemed to be a little unstable and this made for times when I was concerned that something might fall or break. The play has many funny laugh out loud moments. The entire cast had perfect timing when called for to react as one big group. Collapse

      Congrats to City Theatre on a successful opening weekend of Rumors. What a perfect show to begin their sixth season. I think it is one of Neil Simon's funniest plays. And fantastic casting across the board having tons of fun with gun shots, bloody noses, burnt fingers, back spasms, and some serious, well, hilarious dancing. I had a ball! Go see it. You will, too.       When you see Neil Simon you know you are getting something of note. When you read the program for City Theatre of the cast assembled you get an idea of the quality of theatre they provide. Is Rumors for everyone? No. There is some language and adult information. For me it does not subtract but adds to the script. I want to address first the set and costumes. Are they important? Here they are not. The ladies and gents on the stage could have performed in street clothes (granted for a dinner party it would not have worked) The cast melded well together and when things got tough there was always someone to help. Pacing and line delivery are vital for this piece and this cast met that challenge. I have seen Michelle Cheney, Wendy Zavaleta and Rachel McGinnis perform before and they never looked better. Scot Friedman and Daniel Sawtelle were priceless. Jonathan Urso, Melinda Peinado and Tony Salinas fit their characters like a glove. Officer Welch and Pudney even made most of their scenes. Collapse

      One of the most enjoyable Austin productions in years. The show was lively and engaging once past the opening number and juvenile vulgarity. Robby Gibbons showed vocal range, flexibility and intensity from his opening number of “Donna” and subsequent numbers and the “tribe” did a wonderful job of backups and harmonies throughout the show. Glenn Hall did a fine job with his vocals though limited to a one-dimensional role as Claude. Kylie Baker offers a strong voice in an emotion-filled “Easy to Be Hard” and Kristen Bennet gave one of the most powerful singing performances of the night on “White Boys”. The show is truly an enjoyable experience with top notch vocals and dancing. Credit must go to the team of director Jeff Hinkle, musical director David Blackburn and choreographers for molding this talent into a synergistic, must-see musical. Too bad it’s not in a larger venue. And to the woman who brought her young daughter (7 or 8 years old) to the play, “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?” Collapse

      With shows selling out left and right and not a single media review to speak of, City Theater's production of Hair, is one you don't want to wait until closing weekend to buy your tickets for. This production is so much fun! Filled with passion and vibrant energy, that word of mouth ALONE has sold out almost every performance so far!! The music is incredibly fun and powerful. As an audience member you are made to feel like you are part of the tribe, it's truly amazing! You will,laugh,you will cry,you will sing along! Bust out your tie-dye and buy your tickets now!!       WOW, great job. The group numbers were exciting and well choreographed. Michelle Alexander brought life to "Aquarius", Kylie Baker did an emotional and believable "Easy to be Hard", "Where do I Go" was tastefully done,"Abie Baby" (is that the name of that piece?) was stunning, and "Air" was spot on perfect (wish I could remember the name of the singer/actor). i wanted to hear more from Meg Steiner who sang with others in "Black Boys". Claude was hot but Berger was hotter. Go see it, I think you'll REALLY enjoy it. Collapse
