      A little slow start and uneven thru-out first. Were unsure if we should like Kate, (casting? direction?) Missing the relationship between her and Tood, the friendship that drives the narrative. The strongest scenes were the ones with Sybil, the comic relief of Addie Mae and the phone call between Kate, Tood and Weetzie. Perfect timing and choices by all in that scene. The sparse set left me wanting a little more atmosphere and the costumes left a bit to be desired. Certainly not a Turner Classic kind of production or attention to authentic 1940's detail. The Sailor didn't even have a dixie cup or neckerchief not to mention the women's fashion. Overall it's hard to go wrong with such good writing. We were just hoping for a little more "His Girl Friday" out of the production. Pros: Mostly good acting, some stand-out performances, good ensemble, great script Cons: Odd casting choices (too old?), not period dress, slow pace Collapse

      My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Gaslight-Baker Theatre presentation of "The Cover of Life." As a Louisiana native and World War II veteran, I appreciated the attention to detail given in order to capture the period as well as the Louisiana dialect. The fine group of actors managed to elicit laughter and tears with their deft handling of a powerful script. We will certainly attend future productions and will recommend that family and friends do the same. Collapse
