About A Chick & A Dude Productions Founded in 2001, A Chick & A Dude productions, a sponsored project of The Austin Circle of Theatres non-profit organization, is an Austin, Texas-based theatre company aiming to "Keep Austin Weird by Keeping Austin Thinking." The "chick" is Melissa Livingston, a director whose work has been described by NYTheatre.com as doing "...a fine job of creating tight and crisp scenes." The "dude" is Shanon Weaver, writer and actor, about who New York Times freelancer Hy Bender wrote: "The writing, by...Shanon Weaver...is smart and tight; the dialogue in several scenes is so much fun that it garners applause."       Glengarry Glen Ross is a surprisingly short play. It was about an hour and half long total, and that includes one 15 minute intermission. The play is about a real estate company and the real estate agents who work at the company. Times are tough and tough times call for tough measures. The agents are stressed and desperate, and they resort to some despicable practises during the course of the play. The all male cast were terrific. Shannon Weaver and Tom Green were particularly fab, although everyone seemed to break legs. Hyde Park Theatre was the perfect venue for this grubby, snatchy story. Collapse

      There were strong actors that carried the rest of the cast through the play. The director made good choices in casting. There was one thing that bothered me though. Some small details of the set design didn't ring true. To begin with, no females worked in the office, yet there was female handwriting on the chalkboard in the second act. In addition, there was amateur redundancy in the police work. The broken window was both boarded up and taped, which was unnecessary. Overall, very enjoyable! I would absolutely recommend my friends check out more chick & a dude productions. Collapse

      Glengarry is a witty play that is so amusing because it perfectly captures the way men interact with one another, in every situation more or less, but especially in business. The competition, the one-upmanship, the 'mineisbiggerthanyours' reminders, they're all here, all funny, all too real, and masterfully delivered. Glengarry is an american classic and this production is one of the best I've seen. Collapse

      Shanon Weaver as Dunn and Tom Green as Halb found a way to entertain me for two plus hours. I found that with a minimalist set and small cast that it helped set the tone for the drama. This play is advertised as physical drama involving psychological interrogation. The play is one that deals with the question of terrorism (1950s style) but still comparable to todays situation of terrorism. The dynamic between the two men becomes blurred. There were times that I wish there had been a bit more to learn about the CIA character. I believe the story had good merit. Collapse

      The set is minimal - a table, a couple of chairs, a wall cabinet, a barred window, and a door. We're in an interrogation room. We quickly learn from CIA agent David Dunn that we're on a Florida Key island and that it's 1951. With Dunn is Werhner Halb, a doctor who performed "medical research" for the Third Reich, before he escaped to Argentina at the end of the war. The subjects of Halb's research were men, women and children of a Polish concentration camp. Jews. Dunn uses techniques employed by the CIA to try and loosen the tongue of Halb. He wants the formula for the polio vaccine, or so he thinks. The play presents an interesting quandary. Is it OK to torture those who have tortured others? In the first act we learn of the German atrocities of the war. In the second act, we witness the American atrocities. The two actors were superb. Hats off to both. Shanon Weaver as Dunn and Tom Green as Halb entertained me for 2+ hours, and then sent me home with something to think about. Collapse

      When a play is advertised as physical drama involving psychological interrogation, you had best buckle your chin strap. This mounting lives up to the hype. Excellent performances by both Tom Green and Shannon Weaver tell the uncomfortable story. And the sound design is one of the best I have heard. I wish that the story did more to bring out the internal conflict of the interrogator. That would be a useful addition to the current climate of US certainty that we are the all good guys and the "terrorists" are all bad. Collapse
