    Voces y Visiones: Summer Theatre Camp for Girls University of Texas at Austin Voces y Visiones: Summer Theatre Camp for Girls Presented by Teatro Vivo at University of Texas at Austin July 16-August 3, 2012 Teatro Vivo's summer theatre camp, in cooperation with The University of Texas Dept. of Theatre and Dance, will support middle school age girls, ages 11-14, in finding their unique voice and creative vision through the power of writing and performing. The 3-week theatre camp experience will empower girls to realize their own potential as artists, problem solvers and leaders.

Very enjoyable and heart warming story for all to enjoy. Mary Alice Carnes does an outstanding job. You will leave this show saying, "Feliz Navidad". Collapse

      This exciting new play by Austin Latino playwright, Raul Garza, was a thrill to watch on several levels. First of all, placing the US/Mexico border at the center of a play in Austin is truly groundbreaking. While other recent work has touched on the Mexican American experience, Dos Pocitos is about an issue that is relevant to the current social discourse. The story focuses on the region between Texas and Mexico, "Texaco" that has been abandoned by the United States due to drug cartel violence. Although this somber topic is the undertone of the entire play, Dos Pocitos is a comedy and doesn’t miss a beat in making the audience laugh. I was impressed by the actor’s comedic abilities, specifically the cousins (Mateo Barrera and Mario Ramirez) that nostalgically venture into the small town in Texaco where they grew up and hold fond memories of. The cast was successful in engaging the audience and the English/Spanish fusion sure kept all of us on our toes. Great work by Teatro Vivo! Collapse

      Dos Pocitos - Saints and Sinners in a Border Wasteland was the play and with it came a great combination of English, Spanish and Spanglish which I knew enough of to get all what was said and feel it was mostly entertaining. The time period is about 15 years in the future I believe and takes place in a world that has faced some sort of doomsday sort of occurance. The characters of the story were all very compelling and entertaining. I found the acting to be such a strength to this story. The story was a bit on the long side by about 20 minutes maybe but the actors helped in scenes where things did not seem to be always be on target. The set and props where masterminded by the truck and swimming dock and that deserves good praise. I hope to see more from this theatre group because I did enjoy their message and compelling characters. Collapse

      "Dos Pocitos" is a spin on the post-apocalyptic tale. In the story, it's not the apocalypse or a mad max world, but in 2026, south Texas has effectively lost its place within the rest of the state, and is now simply an unregulated, unincorporated territory known as "Texaco." Against this backdrop, a college anthropologist, Abel, and his friend David travel to Texaco to gather more research information, and to see if anyone still lives there. The parallel story is of a married couple, Antonio and Zumela, as they struggle to make a living in the harsh environment with all they can, including Fresca and Spam. The interaction between the characters was well-done, and I found the speculative vision of the future of part of Texas fascinating and eerie. I felt the show would have been better off with at least 20 minutes shaved off, and clearer points of climax and resolution in the story. Overall, it was an interesting show, and I will be interested in Teatro Vivo's next production. Collapse

      Directed by Estevan J. (Chuy) Zarate director actor from San Antonio TX. Dos Picitos has it's evenly tempered comedic and serious interplay dispersed with a skillful hand. Exceptional beaucoups to the set designer, JULIO CARREON-REYES. Covered space and time from large desert to town. Matteo Barrerra as Adam, and Mario Ravierz as Abel, two friends, one on a lark and one on srious academic business travel back to the South Texas area to where they had grown up. Such a well balance of repartee between the two characters. MARISSA CASTANON-HERNANDEZ as Zulema and DONATO RODRIGUEZ as Antonio, a husband and wife team that is rich in character, gum chewing, machine gun totting and in love with honey.       The three Austin playwrights showcased at the Autin Latino New Play Festival last week could not have had a gentler or more supportive audience. Organizers Rupert Reyes and Joanne Carrion-Reyes founded their Teatro Vivo about ten years ago, producing appealing, comic pieces, usually written by Rupert and featuring him. Just the way that Austin has branded itself as the home of "live music," the Reyes' theatre group is known for its "live theatre." "Teatro vivo" also means "lively theatre," and their productions have always been that. They reach out to the Tejano community, that large and increasing population of this town whose first language is English but who have close, family familiarity with the Spanish-language community, principally of Mexican connection.       I went with a group of friends last weekend to see this comedy presented by Teatro Vivo.The play offers a comical, yet insightful look inside a modern day Latino family. Although Latino in context most of the relationship situations could really be set in any family. All five of us agreed that it was a really funny and well acted production. We particularly enjoyed the well timed comedic moments of Matt Sadler,Erica Saenz and Jojanie Segura. We have missed Ms.Segura from the Teatro Vivo stage over the last year or so and were happy to see her back. It was noted that this particular production was almost all in English , with only a smattering of Spanish. Keeping Track was not as bilingual as most Teatro Vivo productions, which is an element we particularly enjoy. Nonetheless, go and see this light- hearted comedy! It is definitely worth it! Collapse

      Keeping Track has a lot of laughs and genuine snippets of life, but stumbles awkwardly over the serious moments. Erica Saenz as the family friend shines with zingers that resonate with anybody who's got a zany girlfriend without an internal monitor. JoJanie Segura's adorable Carolina captures the essence of a caring, and occasionally overbearing, mother. Matt Sadler steals the show with some of the finest nonverbal gags I've ever seen in a show. Couple of notable performances: as new mother Melinda, Martinique Phillips carries a solid performance as a new mother who doesn't want to go back to work, and her resentment, fueled by fear, nearly poisons her family. Rick Olmos as Albert/Beto capably and smoothly embodies the modern Hispanic man, caught between parental loyalty and the limits of a modern family. Karen Alvarado's Janet is the one weak spot of the cast. She struggles with a difficult role and poor choices in emotional levels. Collapse

      Spend a delightful evening or afternoon with this family and a friend and you will leave feeling happy. This is a cleverly written comedy by Erica Saenz who plays the part of the friend. The set is sparse and the play relies heavily on characters, who do not disappoint. The friend as well as the mother (JoJanie Segura) and half-brother (Matt Sadler) are hilarious. These actors add much to the moments and their delivery of the comedic lines. The other actors, Karen Alvarado, Martinique Duchene, and Rick Olmas give just as much to their roles. The story is about bonds and expectations in relationships. It is not all humor. There are disagreements between people and heartwarming moments as well. I look forward to more plays by Ms. Saenz and to productions by Teatro Vivo. Go see this show. You'll enjoy your time with this family. Collapse
