Mary Moody Northen Theatre

Mary Moody Northen Theatre, on the campus of St. Edward's University, is a professional arena theater serving both the students of St. Ed's and the community of Austin. The University's theater program is grounded in classroom training mixed with production experience. In addition MMNT invites guest artists from the world of professional theater, film and television to work with faculty and students in production. By providing students with the basic training, education and experience necessary for the pursuit of theater careers in professional, educational or community theaters, MMMT achieves very unique goals.

      It is so refreshing to see a play with not one but three strong female characters,and to have three strong actresses portray them so beautifully. (Let me not forget the versatile actor who plays roughly six characters throughout the show). With its luscious word play and infectious enthusiasm "On the Verge" has it all. I found myself constantly in aw from the costumes and set, to the inventive theatrical images (who would have expected to go to the theatre and see the actors swing passed you on a rope only a few inches away). Even with all this it is the beautiful relationship between these three woman that resonated the most. Collapse

      On the Verge is about 3 women from the Victorian era who embark on an adventure in a jungle. The jungle exploration then turns into a time-travel adventure as they get transported from era to era and then wind up in 1955. This is definitely surreal theatre, and it certainly has many fun moments, such as when the 3 explorers run into the not-so-Abominable Snowman. Michelle Brandt, Avery Ferguson, and Lindsey Howard work very well together, and Jon Wayne Martin is outstanding in playing 5 + different roles, including a bridge Troll from New York. The main problem is that the story itself is unfocused. When the adventurers get to 1955, the momentum of the story stops, and never picks back up. Further the serious turn On the Verge takes at that point makes the tone of the show as a whole uneven, which prevented me from completely enjoying it. The college-age actors all show great promise, though, and I hope to see more of their performances in the future. Collapse

      I do like unique plays, and this one of three women exploring the jungle was a breath of fresh air. Although seemingly set in Victorian times, the story ventures into the Theater of the Absurd realm with its time travel and copious anachronisms. I enjoyed the characters’ inflated vocabulary. One of the characters seems to make fun of the high vocabulary as she announces a word, then after a pause corrects herself with a better word. All of the actors were strong, and Jon Wayne Martin does an outstanding job depicting 5 or more different characters, from the Abominable Snowman to the Chinese Dragon lady to a “greaser” in the 50’s. The costumes were great; and the set was remarkably simple and adaptable. Along the way concepts are debated such as the preference of traveling alone versus with others; the virtues of trousers over skirts. Finally, I loved the promo picture for the show - a take-off of the Charlie’s Angels’ silhouettes, adapted to include the ladies’ all-purpose umbrellas. Collapse

      This show is a wonderful retelling of the Greek myth of Eurydice: Eurydice gets distracted away from her wedding, ends up in the underworld and eventually gets rescued by her love, Orpheus. Yet, it is told with some wonderful modern twists like a scene in a high rise apartment and The Lord of the Underworld riding around on a tricycle. 2011 meets ancient Greece. There is even a brief clip of a Led Zeppelin song in the show. Cassidy Schiltz, Eurydice, does a stellar job in her role. She flowed from scene to scene and kept my attention the entire time. While it is a story about loss and reconnection, there are humorous moments to lighten the heaviness. The Stones, the keepers of the underworld, toss in lots of humor. I enjoyed watching their facial expressions. Michelle Polgar has done a wonderful job with this show. Collapse

      With Mary Moody's production of the Imaginary Invalid the audience gets a modern and adult view of Molieres story. First and foremost what grabs one attention is the stellar performances of Jill Blackwood, Richard Robiehaux, Michele Brandt, Nathan Brockett, Kendra Perez, Sophia Franzella and Meredith Montgomery. The theatre offers such a good setting for this story. The cast knows how to work all sides of the audience and no one really has a bad seat. The variety of characters adds something truly enjoyable as the story itself is a predictable one but fun to see played out. Anyone who knows Moliere knows his formula. I have never been more intrigued with Jill Blackwood's character of a Russian wife. She knows how to bring the most out of a character. The main charcter of Aregan is one that has to sustain the show for most of the time and is wonderfully done. The subject matter can be a bit adult but think that with a open mind one will not be offended as much as entertained. Collapse

      In a very funny adaption that brings Moliere's comedy into the present day, and is as full of laughs as a TV sitcom, we are introduced to a world of lunatics just like that of Moliere's 400 years ago -in modern day Dallas. Or it could be Los Angeles or New York. The invalid father is using his daughter as a lure to get a doctor into the family to treat his illnesses, most of which center on his bowels. The sound of a strongly flushing toilet offstage is a leitmotif. The characters include the young couple in love, the father's choice for his daughter (an unpleasant conceited guy who plays with an i-pod throughout), the invalid Argan's wife, a fake Russian aristocrat who calls him "boychik" and "Argy-Pargy", and wants all the money, the complicit house-cleaner who sides with the daughter and talks fresh to everyone else, a weird little sister, a reasonable brother, and attendant doctors (including a dominatrix who administers enemas), all wonderfully and comically played.
