“The late architect Samuel Mockbee started the Rural Studio, a design/build architecture program, in which students create charity architecture for impoverished communities in rural Alabama Guided by passionate interviews with Mockbee, the film shows how a group of students use their creativity and compassion to craft a home for their charismatic, destitute client, Jimmie Lee Matthews

“But, the Rural Studio is about more than building It is also about providing students with an experience that forever inspires them to use their skills to better their communities Interviews with Mockbee’s peers and scenes with those he’s influenced infuse the film with a larger discussion of architecture’s role in issues of poverty, class, race, education, citizenship and social change”

After a student is raped, her teacher murders the rapist Even though he is a hero of sorts, the man doesn’t want his act publicized, so a thief who needs to hide a large cache of money simply blackmails the teacher into holding the loot Since he has already gone down a questionable path of amorality, the teacher takes the money and descends into enjoying every possible sensual urge This film highlights Oshima’s exploration of sadism, porn, and obsession

Even more than Leni Riefenstahl, film director Veit Harlan was Hitler and Goebbel’s favorite Third Reich filmmaker He made films in the 1930s which extolled Nazi family values within melodramatic forms Then in 1939 Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels gave Harlan the most important assignment of his career – to make a gripping, mob-stirring film of Jew Süss Superficially it was a costume drama set in the 18th century and purporting to be the “true story” of a Jewish financial adviser, Joseph Süss Oppenheimer, who gained influence over the ruler of Stuttgart in the duchy of Württemberg But the Nazi propaganda minister had a more ominous subtext in mind as he insisted that the film embrace every possible anti-Semitic stereotype about avarice, arrogance, and lust to create the most hate-filled caricature yet in mainstream German cinema That would have been bad enough, but the timing of the film’s release in 1940 had far-ranging consequences which can barely be fathomed today Wartime audiences seeing Jew Süss in Germany and the occupied territories of Europe became totally incensed by the title character and yelled out for his death and that of his co-religionists The film justified hatred, removal, and destruction of an entire people The camps existed already and tens of thousands of political and ethnic prisoners had already been executed, but within two years of the release of Jew Süss those camps would turn into massive extermination factories Harlan’s film irrevocably contributed to the evil sweeping over Europe by depicting the Jewish people as threats to the “purity” of Germany and as worthy of complete annihilation Read more about the film >>

Learn the secrets of Dickens, Steinbeck and Billy Wilder in this master class taught by writer/director/producer Brian McDonald This class is for screenwriters, novelists, playwrights or anyone who is telling a fictional story This workshop is to a writer what anatomy class is to an illustrator You will learn how to construct a story from the ground up by examining classic films and storiesBrian has taught his craft at Pixar, George Lucas’s ILM, and Disney Feature Animation He supplies writers with tools for building a compelling story around a theme, creating appealing characters making their work more effective and providing a deeper understanding of the storyteller's art
When people think of a screenplay, they usually think about dialogue—the "visible ink" that is readily accessible to the listener, reader, or viewer But a successful screenplay needs Invisible Ink as well, the craft below the surface of words

The alarming rise in “honor killing,” the heinous act of men killing daughters, sisters, and wives who threaten “family honor,” endangers tens of thousands of women in Iraq, Turkey, Jordan and adjoining countries

Global communication through satellite television, Internet, and cell phones has raised the expectations of young Middle Eastern women, who now are not content to marry a much older relative their father might chooses and live a life of servitude While young women respond to new ideas from cyber pals in Los Angeles or episodes of popular Western sit-coms, their fathers and brothers demand strict tribal justice for their acts Particularly in rural areas women have been killed simply for having unfamiliar phone numbers on their cell phones or speaking to men who are not relatives

Activist women, journalists, and lawmen of the Kurdistan Regional Government (the KRG) join forces to eradicate honor killing and redefine “honor”
