The exhibition Clowns and Portraits will feature a new series of paintings on panel and paper as well as new small-scale portraits in oil on panel The artist’s most recent paintings are gestural depictions of clowns in which Jim Torok examines the area between abstraction and figuration Like Picasso, Lautrec, Nauman and others before him, Torok explores this often personal and introspective subject matter These paintings draw a parallel to the artist’s cartoon-like alter ego seen in many of his earlier works as both depict long, oval faces, skinny necks, and large noses Employing both the paint- brush and his fingers as tools, building layer upon layer, these works are undoubtedly the most expressive, self-exploratory renderings of Torok’s career

In "Revising the Century," Austin experimental musician and artist Josh Ronsen invited Mail Artists to alter photographs chronicling the 20th Century These were photos of generals, kings, presidents, despots, heroes, victims, and regular people The artists could request photos from particular years or themes (one choose "just the scumbags, please") and use them in any artistic transformation Some 40 artists submitted 180 works of revisionist history, creating an alternate universe of whimsies and horrors This will be the only time all 180 works will be displayed together before they are mailed back out to different artists
Are you sustaining various ecosystems?
Are you sustaining your creative process?
Are you sustaining vitality of your work in new contexts?
Are you sustaining yourself through peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?
If you answered "YES" to any of the above, come hear Jack Becker discuss the various ways that sustainability relates to art (especially public art) at the Austin Museum of Art!
Jack is an artist, founder and executive director of Forecast Public Art foundation, and editor of Public Art Review magazine, the world's leading journal devoted exclusively to the field of contemporary public art Becker specializes in projects that connect the ideas and energies of artists with the needs and opportunities of communities and has organized over 70 exhibitions, 50 publications and numerous special events nationwide
Lisa is an artist from Calgary, Alberta, who makes pop-art woodcuts using salvaged 100-year old Douglas fir

Artist statement: I have been experimenting with figurative woodcuts for almost twenty years since being introduced to the medium by printmakers at the Alberta College of Art and Design Recently, I have been wrestling with a new challenge: five truckloads of salvaged century-old rough Douglas fir beams from the restoration of the Alberta Block in Calgary and from the dismantling of grain elevators This wood is very interesting in its history and also in that it is oddly shaped Unlike traditional woodcut material such as cherry or walnut, the material is ornery There are holes and knots and gouges and rusty nails sticking out the sides

Much like her music, Grace’s art ranges from soft and cuddly to somewhat outrageous with a little psychedelic influence mixed in along the way Grace began drawing as a little girl and, although she kept sketching and drawing through her life, it was not until she looked deep into herself and found that art was very good therapy for her troubled life at a particularly stressful time On the advice of her book agent, she began drawing portraits of rock legends as well as images of her beloved animals Several of these images were used as color plates in her book Somebody to Love

"I see my sculptures as poets celebrating life's passion and nobility They represent the mysteries and the sanctity of daily life in pure lines and elongated style Their forms are mostly female figures communicating the feminine spirit of nurturing, tenderness, and strength When sculpting wood, I experience a constant mystical flow of rhythm, harmony and effort The ebb and flow of this process gives fruition, a physical definition, to the unwritten poetry of the wood The challenge of sculpting gives the most sense to my life, because it perpetuates my dreams and allows me to share the wood's enchanted poetry with others"

Fine Art Photographer “The inspiration for this body of work came to me while working in my garden, where the most interesting things happen on a very small scale; things that at first glance appear quite ordinary, but turn out to be, on closer inspection, sublimely beautiful
Most of these photographs were taken in my backyard, and the images reflect a direct communion with fleeting natural phenomena in the process of living and changing from moment to moment I realized I didn't have to travel far to find interesting landscapes; I just had to enter deeply into my own garden, where there resides a seemingly infinite number of living things Because the subjects are "in their element," they have an immediacy and wildness that cannot be captured in a studio or as a specimen One thing I strive for in all of my images is extreme simplicity I pay close attention to the light and contrast of the environment By using selective focus, I am able to isolate subtle details not seen by passing perception, while at the same time convey the subjects' ephemeral presence”

For his New Works project, Austin-based artist Luke Savisky will transform a gallery at the Museum into a mesmerizing immersive environment of light and imageSee several projection installations explore ideas about perception, exposure, surveillance, and perspective

AMOA Installation
Luke Savisky, who works in both traditional and non-traditional art spaces, creates multi-media installations that transform natural and architectural settings Exploring the spectrum of the human experience through film and art, he stretches the limits of visual media using found film montage, direct projection techniques, kinetic sets and sculptures, and unusual projection surfaces in unlikely environments Using vintage film equipment in concert with contemporary digital technology, his installations suggest transition, transmutation, decay, and renewal using oblique montage and abstract light-sculpting techniques

Fatima Ronquillo is a self-taught painter whose classically inspired imagery evokes a world of serenity and charm Her paintings of mysterious personages, often set against pastoral and idyllic landscapes, are accented with an underlying sense of drama and playfulness These small intimate works invite a respite from the frenetic pace of modern life

Fatima is an intuitive painter working from a deeply personal visual language and imagination Each painting is an unfolding story of layered meanings brought to life through multiple layers of paint Her painted surfaces sparkle with thin delicate glazes over thick impastos and scattered scumbles of semi transparent colors She paints in the style of the European classical traditions coupled with a magical realism rooted in folk and colonial imagery Hers is an authentic voice that echoes from an inner world where art history meets with nostalgia and imagined characters from literature, theatre and opera

The spaces will be filled with objects designed and modeled after tools developed by educational philosophers Maria Montessori and Friedrich Frobel While the classrooms themselves become the artwork, the spaces will be activated by a series of public programs developed by the artist and her colleagues and collaborators, including a computer program designed by ExCorporation

Pablo Picasso's involvement with printmaking was a passionate and lifelong creative endeavor His prolific output of prints underscored his development as an artist and revealed his seemingly limitless capacity for reinvention This exhibition presents The Blanton's holdings of Picasso's prints, and highlights the artist's uncanny ability to explore and experiment with the medium's variety of techniques Major works include the lithographic Head of a Woman (1925), four works from the celebrated Suite Vollard (1930–1937) including the Blind Minotaur Guided by a Young Girl in the Night, and Bust in Profile (1957), one of many images he created of his young wife Jacqueline Roque

The Italian word chiaroscuro means “light and dark”, and refers to a technique in painting in which tone and depth are created by a dramatic use of contrast Applied to woodcut, the term describes a color print created with different colored blocks, ranging from pale ink to black ink Such woodcuts were developed in the early sixteenth-century by masters like Ugo da Carpi principally as a means of reproducing drawings, and flourished with virtuoso artists like Parmigianino and Hendrick Goltzius In the eighteenth century, the technique returned to the reproduction of Old Master drawings and paintings, while leading the way to the development of illustrated wallpaper This exhibition chronicles the history and reveals the beauty of the technique

This exhibit explores 1930s Austin, how the Depression had a lasting impact on our community, and what lessons can be learned as the country grapples with the current economic woes The economic recession gripping the United States has many eerie similarities to the Great Depression Each coincided or began with a precipitous moment: the 1929 Stock Market crash “began” the Great Depression and the mortgage crisis was the defining moment of the current recession Experiencing the impact of the 1930s on our city may leave us wondering what Austin will be like when our current economic troubles also pass into history
