Why are some of Austin's most highly regarded actors working with a fledgling Austin director? Audiences will find out when Breakin’ String Theatre presents UT student, Graham Schmidt's brand new translation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull written in 1896. Schmidt, who studies Russian dramatic literature as an M.A. candidate at the University of Texas at Austin, has translated this iconic work and is directing a cast that includes Babs George, Matt Radford, and Dirk van Allen - all whom star in key roles.
Graham Schmidt, who aspires to become a Chekhovian scholar, muses on why the city's best are involved, 'Their interest, and the rest of the cast, too, was initially sparked by the opportunity to study/perform Chekhov - who is, I think, is a bit intimidating for anybody to approach. Plus, it's one of the
greatest plays in world history. Chekhov is maybe the only playwright mentioned in the same breath as Shakespeare.' He continues, 'Also, because James Loehlin is performing in the production.' Loehlin, a Shakespearean professor at the University of Texas and director of UT's beloved Shakespeare at Winedale program, last year published a book on The Cherry Orchard (Cambridge University Press).
