Come see Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller’s masterpiece about the failure of the American Dream, at The City Theatre, directed by Andy Berkovsky. Arthur Miller’s “tragedy of the common man” – a gripping portrait of a life based on false values – won the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Antoinette Perry Award in 1949. Both an indictment of a materialistic society and a probing view of family relationships, the play has been lauded for its mining of the links between individual lives and public events, and between present and past experience. At the center of this timeless story is Willy Loman (Barry Pineo). Who, while adhering to the illusive American ideal puts unrelenting pressure on his sons, Biff (Brandon Nagle) and Happy (Tyler Jones), to achieve at all costs, never realizing that neither he nor they can ever live up to these illusions. The sons’ struggle to win their father’s love as well as to forge their own independent lives, and their mother, Linda Loman’s (Laurie Coker) attempts to mediate this battle, is a universal story that continues to move audiences world-wide.
