Shirley Valentine is an ordinary middle-class English housewife. As Shirley literally chats to the walls in her kitchen—her kids are grown and gone—she ponders the past and conjectures whether a life that finds its climax in placing her husband’s dinner on the table is really a full existence. With humor and intense conviction, this 42-year-old Liverpool housewife confronts her future and her fate—whether to join a girlfriend who’s purchased two tickets for a fortnight in Greece … or to continue cooking. When her husband spurns the egg and chips Shirley has prepared, she escapes to Greece to find the “missing person” within, and in the course of her adventures, she begins to question her sexual and social identity.
