Jayanthi Kumaresh is one of the foremost classical instrumentalists of our time. The Veena – her instrument of choice – is a 7-stringed South Indian cousin to the sitar. Prior to the introduction of the violin into Carnatic (South Indian Classical) music in the 19th century, the Veena was the stringed accompaniment of choice for most concerts, but went into relative decline despite its antiquity and rich musical heritage, and was supplanted by the violin in the early part of the 20th century. It then fell into disuse, with relatively few practitioners until it was popularized again by the Late Veena S. Balachander.
