Funnyhouse of a Negro documents the last desperate moments of a young African American woman named Sarah. Within the confines of her bedroom, Sarah lives in a nightmarish fantasy, cast with historical figures that alternately relieve and inflame her crisis of identity. Her self image, twisted as if reflected from a funhouse mirror, draws her closer to death. In her struggle against these perversions, Sarah wrestles with the ghosts of her heritage and those of her own conception.
