For the 2007 Mid-Winter Symposium, the TCC begins its journey into the larger choral pieces of the 19th century with its study and performance of Antonin Dvorak's Stabat Mater, Opus 58. This beautiful work, describing the Virgin Mary's vigil at the crucifixion of her son Jesus, had its genesis in tragedy; between 1875-77, Dvorak lost three of his children in a horrible series of diseases and accidents, and completed the score in November of 1877. The Stabat Mater received its first performance on 23 December 1880, and subsequently received numerous performances in Great Britain, Europe and the USA, and helped establish Dvorak's reputation abroad at that time. Today, it remains the best known of Dvorak's numerous choral works and, like most of his music, continues to fascinate on several levels.
