During Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler's 17-year collaboration the artists produced some of the most respected conceptual art projects of the time including important public commissions, site-specific installations, drawings, and mixed-media sculpture. Yet, their oeuvre is not well known because much of it was contextually site specific, produced and shown outside of the major urban art centers, and directed toward non-traditional art audiences. In addition, many of their most celebrated pieces employed ephemerality as a way of considering the nature of time and memory in a culture that erases its own history. The destruction or obscuring of works was often an integral part of the pieces, leaving little behind for visual study. What remains-objects, archival documents, and the less site-specific projects that can be recreated within this exhibition-is relevant to today’s young artists who are actively pursuing ideas opened up by these innovators. Yet the work is often overlooked by critical reviews of recent art practice and are thus inaccessible to an audience with little direct experience of the work.
