A Century in Pictures presents a selection of approximately 80 photographs by American photographers from the Target Collection of American Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The collection contains a number of significant photographs by seminal photographers including Alfred Stieglitz, James Van Der Zee, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, Ray Metzker, Kenneth Josephson, Joel Sternfeld, and Catherine Wagner, whose works are now considered the basis of the tradition of American photography. Key moments in that history are represented, such as Stieglitz’s The Steerage (1907), Frederick Sommer’s Arizona Landscape (1945), selections from Frank’s The Americans (1955/56), and Ed Ruscha’s Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966). Highlighting a range of artistic impulses, the exhibition demonstrates a variety of approaches to photography. These artists, who gave expression to the world around them from different perspectives, in turn have also affected contemporary photographic practices.
