Add Review/CommentVORTEX Repertory Company presents The VORTEX Living Room Series Casual readings of plays at The VORTEX This Month: a reading of In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks VORTEX Repertory company presents another in its Living Room Series: a reading of In the Blood, Suzan-Lori Parks’ modern-day re-imagining of The Scarlet Letter. In the Blood is the story of a mother of five, who struggles to survive on the tough streets of the inner-city, facing racial, gender, and social injustice. Though Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter was set in the middle of the seventeenth century, Parks’ In the Blood leads us to question whether much has changed. Michelle K. Fowler directs the reading. The cast includes Gina Houston, Kelley Harman, Kelley Hunt, Tiffany Nicely-Williams, Steven Fay, and Wendy Goodwin. “Suzan-Lori Parks’ extraordinary new play, In the Blood is about the way we live now, and it is truly harrowing. Ms. Parks’ writing has grown leaner and hungrier, and you will leave this play feeling pity and terror. We cannot turn away, and we do not want to.” — Margo Jefferson, New York Times Free bagels. Light refreshments available for sale in the café: Beer, wine, champagne, sangria, coffee, soft drinks.
