ONE-EYED JACKS

Marlon Brando directs and stars in this odd, arty and existential western. The mercurial actor plays a robber who, betrayed by a fellow gang member and left for dead, returns years later to exact a biblical revenge. With Karl Malden, Katy Jurado, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, and the mysterious Pina Pellicer (who died just after shooting) as the woman caught in the middle. The screenplay was touched by many hands including Sam Peckinpah, Rod Serling and Stanley Kubrick, who was originally slated to direct, but the final product bears the mark of Brando’s improvisational aesthetic.
