A towering figure in the history of free jazz and improvised music, Peter Brötzmann is bringing a band to Los Angeles for the first time since the 1970s. From his landmark 1968 octet recording Machine Gun to his work with his Chicago Octet/Tentet in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s, Brötzmann’s powerful yet sympathetic sound continues to be one of the most distinctive voices in the history of the saxophone. Since his emergence in the mid-1960s, he has been roaring strong, appearing on over 300 recordings and playing with the most luminous of jazz luminaries including Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald, Joe McPhee, Han Bennink, Evan Parker, Keiji Haino, and Mats Gustafsson.

The Quartet he brings to L.A. features the telepathically connected rhythm section of John Edwards on doublebass and Steve Noble on drums, with whom Brötzmann has released two live recordings: Soulfood Available on Clean Feed Records and The Worse The Better on the Otoroku imprint. Chicago vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz rounds out this group, who also have a live release under their belt, 2014’s Mental Shake, also on Otoroku.

John Edwards has been a mainstay on the London improvised music scene for over two decades, playing between 150-200 gigs a year with the likes of John Butcher, Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Lovens, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Roger Turner, Marshall Allen, and many others. 

Steve Noble studied drumming with Nigerian master Elkan Ogunde and has been working extensively in improvised music since the 1980s. Pat Thomas, Hans Koch, Jacques Demierre, Alex Ward, and Tristan Honsinger are regular collaborators. He has composed music for the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, multiple dancers and dance groups and he runs the label Ping Pong Productions.

Jason Adasiewicz is a vibraphonist, drummer, and composer. He is an integral member of Chicago’s jazz and improvised music scene, bringing his aggressive yet lyrical style to over 10 working Chicago groups, including Rob Mazurek’s Starlicker and Exploding Star Orchestra, Mike Reed’s Loose Assembly, and Brötzmann : Jason Adasiewicz Duo.
Starlicker (with Rob Mazurek and John Herndon) Double Demon (Delmark 2011) was named by the New York Times as a Top 10 Pop and Jazz Record of 2011 and the Los Angles Times as a Top 10 Jazz Record of 2011. Adasiewicz won the 2011 Downbeat Annual Critic’s Poll in the Rising Star Vibes category.
