A thematic and tonal “sequel” to Wong Kar-wai’s IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, the visually lush film 2046 takes us into the mind of journalist/writer Chow Mo Wan (played by the always fascinating, devilishly charming, and seductive Tony Leung Chiu-wai) as he has affairs with a variety of women, some of whom live next door in room 2046. But he is haunted by memories of one particular woman in Singapore. Regretting his loss, he becomes a womanizer, seemingly sweet at the beginning but in full control of the ending of each romance.
As he explores writing fiction, he begins to wonder about the year 2046, when Hong Kong will be finally and completely integrated into China and its political system, whatever that might be by then. Chow imagines 2046 as a time and place where one goes to forget but also from which no one ever returns. As always with Wong Kar-wai and his lush visuals worked out with cinematographer Christopher Doyle, mood, tone, and feeling are perhaps even more important than story.
"Full of lush, melancholy sensuality and swathed in light as lustrous and supple as the Shantung dresses all of the actresses seem to wear." [A.O. Scott, New York Times]
