Ensemble Settecento will present “Prevailing Winds,” a concert consisting exclusively of chamber music for wind instruments, on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 3:30 PM, at St. David’s Episcopal Church in downtown Austin (301 E. 8th St.). Tickets range from $15 for adults to $10 for seniors and $5 for university students with a valid ID; K-12 students are admitted free with an adult ticket purchase.

“We often receive a good number of questions about the wind instruments we use in our performances,” said Traylor, an alumnus of Indiana University’s renowned Early Music Institute. “Because of this, I decided that it would be a good idea to, for one concert, give our string players the night off and focus on our wind players. While all of the instruments we use are quite distinct from their modern equivalents, the winds are particularly different. The flutes are wooden instead of metal, and all of the instruments have only a fraction of the number of keys that the modern instrument has. For the reed instruments, the reed is quite different in its construction as well. These changes in design lead to drastic differences in both the tone color and the performance practice between the period wind instruments and the modern ones.”

Composers whose music will be performed include Boismortier, Bach, Schütz, and Telemann. In addition to the baroque instruments upon which the ensemble regularly performs, they will also perform on Renaissance instruments including recorder, shawm, dulcian, and crumhorn, with works from Praetorius and del Encina played using these consort instruments.

Proceeds from the concert will help defray the group’s costs, including fees related to the ensemble’s 501(c)(3) non-profit application.
