Painting with the Past: Documentarians & Archival Material

Many documentarians bring amazing stories to life via archival footage and source material. As advantageous as it can be to have existing footage to build from, crafting stories from outside content has challenges from both an artistic and production standpoint. Directors Paul Lovelace and Jessica Wolfson will share insights into crafting a visually captivating film from a massive radio archive in their film RADIO UNNAMEABLE, and Sam Wainwright Douglas will discuss treasure hunting pop-culture's past for HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS: BOUND TO LOSE. The conversation will be moderated by Paul Stekler, who is responsible for a Magnum Opus of documentary archival sourcing, GEORGE WALLACE: SETTIN' THE WOODS ON FIRE. The conversation will also discuss production issues, such as budgeting and negotiating for source material.
