    This month, The Butterfly Bar features artist Zel Stoltzfus and his collection of immensely detailed wildlife paintings. Fun, unique, and informative, Zel’s artwork is something that can be appreciated by all! Join us for his opening of Drawing Planet Earth!

    Characterized by his precision and “evocative compositions,” Zel gained much of his influence growing up immersed in nature. Fun, unique, and informative, Zel’s artwork is something that can be appreciated by all! Join us for his opening of Drawing Planet Earth on Saturday, July 7 at 6pm!

    Artist Statement

    My work is a cross-section, mainly of drawings but a few paintings, of some of what interests me. They are snapshots, sometimes literally, of landscapes and organisms that I find fascinating or meaningful. Tanzania figures prominently into my work as I spent three years of my life growing up there.

    I find that my work tiptoes on the edge of science and art. I am almost pedantic about getting detail correct but am in love with the painterly strokes and deft strokes of oil painters, and the innate beauty in my subjects. This creates a conflict in my mind as I work but also leads me towards images that I hope are more and deeper than just the thing that they depict.

    I’ve grown up in a lot of different places and moved to a new country or state almost every year since college. I’m restless in my geographical wanderings and I find that my work reflects that fact. But I’m also patient and like to learn about the places that I’m living and my work reflects that fact too. Modern life is often confusing and chaotic and drawing focuses my mind and, dare I say, soul in a way that nothing else does. I hope that you like what you see.
