Theater - Comedy; The Kitchen Witches by Caroline Smith
The show is set as an actual "live" television production, where part of the audience has a hand in the taste testing. Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called "The Kitchen Witches," the insults are flung harder than the food! Dolly's long suffering TV-producer son, Stephen, tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly's dressing room is one inch closer tot he set than Isobel's, it's a losing battle, and the show becomes a ratings smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer! Simmer together 2 battling chefs, ship in one long-suffering producer, fold in insults, props and food, then sprinkle liberally with an animated audience and you have the tasty treat of a great evening of fun!

      The Way Off Broadway Community Player’s latest show, The Kitchen Witches, opens with tasty tidbits of “local” KWOB programming playing on off-stage monitors. Director Ed Trujillo has creatively used the setting, a cable access station’s rival cooking queens, to his advantage. By using the live camera shoot, we see the show not only from our seats in the audience, but also what the “home viewers” would be seeing if the show were truly broadcast. Shelly Kelly and Barb Jernigan shine as the Witches – each having a very different viewpoint in the kitchen. As one show ends its broadcast and a new show is hatched, the plot comes to a boil at the end of Act 1 and we learn some very important information key to the on-going rivalry. You’re taking a chance if you leave the interior of the theater during intermission; you’ll miss more of Trujillo’s creative use of the company’s actors, or even be caught up in the show itself. Come and to taste what WOBCP has to offer, before it’s all gone! Collapse
