Last Act Theatre Company presents LOVE IN PINE
Love was in the air on prom night in the town of Pine, TX, but Boy and Girl didn’t make
it to the dance – a fatal head-on collision with a pine tree trapped their souls inside the
tree itself.
Two years later, the lonely town Teacher and Girl’s guilt-racked Sister try to
?nd them a different ending to prom night, but how exactly does one change the past?
And how can they stop the wild?re scorching its way through the county? And why
does the Tree herself want to keep them there? A heartbreaking, supernatural twist on
the traditional American prom night story, Love in Pine is a bold, poetic, relevant new
play by local writer/director Gary Jaffe set in the pine woods of central Texas, where
trees talk, prom lasts forever, and love, for better or worse, is love.
*One night’s proceeds will be donated to the Bastrop Fire Relief Fund.
Praise for writer/director Gary Jaffe’s previous work:
THE DUDLEYS!: A FAMILY GAME (Tutto Theatre Company)
The Dudleys! asks a lot of itself and its audience. At times, the drama practically hits
you over the head with its rawness, and yet the next level will have a visit to a failing
cancer clinic degenerate into a co-op zombie brawler game. But for all its complexities
and shifting tone, the ending is quite emotionally affecting, and there are lots of
delights along the way.
-Avimaan Syam, Austin Chronicle 5/20/2011
SPIRITS TO ENFORCE (Capital T Theatre)
With a true sensitivity to language, serious comic chops, and seamless ensemble work,
Gary Jaffe and his superteam of actors transformed The Tempest into something "rich
and strange."
-Robert Faires, Austin Chronicle 1/6/2012
BEAUTIFUL LITTLE FOOLS (Yale University)
The whole sweep of brilliance ?nds an able guide in Gary Jaffe ’10, a director who has
both an intellectual and intuitive understanding of the text. The actors’ movements are
orchestrated as if the whole thing were a morbid ballet. Genius is sublime and
rapacious; love is undying and fatal...Their descent is rendered with savage simplicity:
a broken glass, a half-empty bottle of whisky, a pile of crushed sleeping pills. Before
the performance is over, the ?oor is literally strewn with the remnants of a life destined
for disaster. But the truly soul-wrenching power of Beautiful Little Fools derives from
the fact that the artistic team never loses sight of the beautifully brutal tempest of a
love story at the center of the play. The play isn’t good. It’s merciless, terri?cally
ruthless, and will ultimately leave you speechless.
-Austin Bernhardt, Yale Daily News. 4/2/2010.
