 Two thousand years after the collapse of civilization, in one of the last nomadic bands left in an increasingly settled land, a boy named Riddley Walker turns twelve years old and becomes a man of his people. They are outsiders in a culture where packs of wild dogs prowl the landscape, roving puppet shows propagate a historical dogma against technology and cleverness, and secretive sects work to rediscover ancient knowledge. With a very old puppet and a black dog for allies, Riddley escapes from the tragedy and authority of his culture and reintroduces comedy and anarchy to his world.

Riddley Walker is adapted for Trouble Puppet Theater Co. by Artistic Director Connor Hopkins, from the novel by Russell Hoban.

Trouble Puppet Theater Co., recipient of such B. Iden Payne Awards as Outstanding Director of a Drama, Special Certificate for Puppetry, and Outstanding Original Script, is dedicated to the creation of outstanding works of puppet theater for grownups. This production employs tabletop puppetry inspired by the Bunraku tradition and supported by an original score by Justin Sherburn as well as shadow puppetry, hand puppetry, and a layered sound and image design. Look for the show’s puppet shows within puppet shows!

      Connor Hopkins does it again with a fabulous cast in Trouble Puppet's latest production, Riddley Walker. Though the story was at times difficult to follow because of the stylized language, the set, costume, and puppet design and the performances of the actors fully make up for it. Set 2,000 years in the future Riddley Walker tells a story of a dark future where technology and cleverness are the evils of the world.       Trouble Puppet Theater is putting on RIDLEY WALKER Puppet Show . Have you ever seen a Puppet show? I mean a REAL PUPPET SHOW. I had no idea what it takes to put on a show of this magnitude, the people it takes to complete the puppetry. They also used the hand puppets, too, which were also funny and delightful. The show is worth seeing, and to watch puppeteers make their puppet talk and walk. I enjoyed the background screen and the puppets used for this background. Collapse

      Although Riddley Walker is tough to follow as a story and demands a lot of the audience, the amazing technical skills of this marvelous theatre company in Austin cannot be ignored. The accents and... Expand

      Although Riddley Walker is tough to follow as a story and demands a lot of the audience, the amazing technical skills of this marvelous theatre company in Austin cannot be ignored. The accents and the foreign names as well as the plot structure would be better served if there was some summary in the program. The performances are wonderful and the puppet magic is exceptional. This special theatre deserves a lot of attention. Check it out. Collapse
