Yuddy, a work-averse young man, gets by with the help of women, old and young. The demure Su Lizhen, who diligently holds down menial jobs, is finally won over by Yuddy’s philosophical pick-up lines, while the brash nightclub entertainer Mimi is confident she can get him and keep him. The older woman of the trio, a just-about-to-be washed-up prostitute, has raised Yuddy since childhood, but theirs is a twisted, Oedipal relationship full of anger, pain, sorrow, and something slightly distasteful. When she finally reveals his mother’s identity and whereabouts, Yuddy goes off to the Philippines in search of explanations for his abandonment. His two younger lovers are left to fend for themselves, one with a gentle cop/night watchman, the other with a childish, flashy, clueless friend of Yuddy’s. This rainy, gritty Hong Kong has never looked so beautiful through hyper-stylish compositions bathed in colors laced with shadows. Adding to the beauty are some of Hong Kong’s top actors, always available for a Wong Kar-wai film.

The story of the Days of Being Wild is a tale of a playboy who wins and breaks womens hearts and leaves a trail of broken women who try to cope afterward. That is the impression that I got. The story... Expand
