 Austin Shakespeare’s Artistic Director Ann Ciccolella will stage HAMLET starring Helen Merino as the Prince at the Long Center’s Rollins Studio Theater, Sept 22–Oct 9. Last season, Merino wowed audiences as the title character of Mary Stuart. Now living in New York City, Merino starred in numerous professional productions in her seven years as an Austin actor.

“With this production, Helen becomes one of the few women in theatrical history to do Hamlet as a male character twice over a ten year span for the same company in two very different productions” says Artistic Director, Ann Ciccolella.

Merino played Hamlet for Austin Shakespeare in Zilker Park ten years ago.

The professional company, now in its fourth year performing at the Long Center, will transform the Rollins Studio Theater with set design by Kevin Beltz and lights by award-winning designer Jason Amato.

The company boasts 14 professional actors playing 23 roles; actors span alumni of Austin Shakespeare and actors new to the company and to Austin.

      This production of Hamlet is one of the best I have ever seen. The minimalist scenery is very impressive – and leaves space for the acting. Helen Merino as Hamlet is phenomenal. She is ably supported by a great cast. This outstanding production should not be missed Collapse

      This was my first introduction to a live performance of Shakespeare, so I might be a little bias. I loved the show! The three hour run time was off putting at first, but I was surprised at how the time flew by. I am no expert in Shakespeare but I believe the actors pulled their roles off wonderfully. Helen Merino’s acting reminds me of a younger Emma Thompson, and that is a very good thing. Her performance as Hamlet was quite enjoyable to watch and I thought she conveyed the madness, humor and pain of the character very well. Scott Shipman and Chelsea Duvall were also wonderful as Polonius and Ophelia. I look forward to seeing this and other plays by Austin Shakespeare. Collapse

      Austin Shakespeare's production of Hamlet is hands down the best production of Shakespeare that I have ever seen. Helen Merino as Hamlet is amazing and she is not alone in her great performance - her fellow cast members are excellent too. This is a standout production, and should not be missed. Collapse
