On Saturday, November 5th, Wally Workman Gallery opens its first solo show with oil painter Joyce Howell. Joining the gallery just two short years ago, Howell's abstracts have already commanded much attention with local and national collectors alike. Her use of color and movement evokes an emotional response that causes one to linger in front of her works. She is able to translate not a finite emotion, but one that gently undulates warmly throughout.

"The act of painting, for me, is based on instinct and rooted in nature. I seek rhythm and contradiction in my hues, marks and textures. Painting provides me the opportunity to reflect on the beauty that appears in memory and spontaneously at my feet - if only I am willing to pay attention."

Howell lives and works in Kingsland, Texas on the Colorado River, providing ample opportunity to observe color changes relating to atmosphere, temperature, wind, time of day and season. Howell feels even the most pastoral scene, when observed carefully, is riotous in color, texture, pattern and value. Observation of these elements affected by depth, wind, light and shadow are played out with paint in the studio and come to life throughout her current body of work.

Howell holds a Master of Fine Arts from Texas Tech University.
