MEETSPACE: Call For Artists A participatory forum on emergent culture When: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 @ 8 pm (Practice begins at 2 pm) Where: The VORTEX, 2307 Manor Rd. Austin, TX 78722 Free Parking. Bus Route. The Butterfly Bar @The VORTEX open 5pm-Midnight Tickets: Free Admission (Donations Accepted) MEETSPACE is the first in a series of ongoing Temporary Media Labs that allow artists to meet in a real space and engage in the hands on production of work, exploring the messy circumstances of real time improvisation with like-minded collaborators. The mission of MEETSPACE is to detect and inspire a community of media artists, musicians and theatrical performers to participate in a performance laboratory. This Hybrid Workspace will allow artists to immerse themselves in a collaborative creative environment. As part of Austin’s New Works Community and supported in part by a grant from the Mellon Foundation, MEETSPACE provides a master audio video track, and multiple "live stations". Each live station has a video camera, mic, and a display/monitor. Artists will utilize this engaging format of the live stations to perform their work as it's presented simultaneously in real and virtual space. Artist Preparation: Artists should bring and show 3-10 minutes of their work, revisit a past work, or try something new. Experiments are welcome. For example, a dancer might try working with text. It’s the same idea for actors and musicians. You are the cameraperson; you choose what’s in the frame. If you don’t like it, try again and again, take risks, and push yourself. MEETSPACE is the place to grow and learn to work with new tools and embrace errors. Artists are invited to check out the Hybrid Workspace and familiarize themselves with the equipment between 2 and 8pm. The Butterfly Bar opens at 5pm. For more information or inquires about participation please contact: Pedro Alexander (206-240-2908 or multilocal@gmail.com) or Tim Mateer (512-587-6459 or tmateer@hotmail.com) Pedro Alexander returned to Austin from Seattle where he has been creating opera and rock & roll spectacles. Tim Mateer has been working in theatre, film, and television in Austin for over 30 years. He was a founding member of Big State Productions and Migration Performance Group. Tim spent nine years on the road with the Greater Tuna Company, played with the band Meat Joy, and has taught acting for both theatre and film at Alleywood Studios.
