The unsinkable Molly Ivins, Austin's no-holds-barred newspaper columnist and best-selling author, is back to tell it like it is in a side-splittingly funny play. A true Texas original, Ivins was a sharp-tongued wit who skewered the "Lege" and the good ol' boys who ran it with her unforgettable humor and wisdom. Written by twin journalist sisters, Margaret and Allison Engel celebrate Molly's courage and tenacity – even when a complacent America wasn't listening — in a play that is nothing short of kick ass.

Bravo Barbara Chisholm! Barbara was fantastic in the practically one-woman show Red Hot Patriot. She was Molly Ivins, recalling her life experiences and stories, and some hilarious tales and insights of the Texas legislature. Spencer Carter, as the copy boy, had no lines, but provided some funny moments, and toward the end, a knife in the heart. I felt proud to be a regular reader of The Texas Observer, and I miss Molly. She'd surely have a time with the current legislature! Amen. The play was performed on the Whisenhunt stage of the Zach Scott theatre, a lovely venue. The circular stage lent itself well to this performance.

Although I'm a life-long Molly Ivins fan, those unfamiliar with her work will be fans after this experience. Barbara Chisholm does a marvelous job with this material and Ivins' personal journey is as facinating as her work. The venue is perfect for this play;intimate and in-the-round. A special nod to Spencer Carter as the Copy Boy. He says a lot without uttering a word, the hallmark of a great actor.
To portray a real person versus a fictional character takes a lot of work and Chisholm doesn't try to do an impersonation of Ivins. She makes the character her own, which adds to, rather than distract from the story. She seems delighted to share this story with us, and we fall in love with the first line. Go see Red Hot Patriot and share in the magic of one of Texas' greatest legends of all time.

There are a few Austinites I would have really liked
to have met before moving on to the great BBQ joint
in the sky, and tonight I feel like I can almost check
Molly Ivins off that list A truly passionate portrayal
of this pistol of a woman was delivered by Barbara
Chisholm to a full and enthusiastically liberal house.
Barbara conveyed with convincing accuracy the size
of this woman's spirit who gave us a piece of her
mind, even through death. The loss of her father is
the dramatic counterpoint to some rip-roaring
stories about the Texas "lege" not excluding the
"shrub" (rhymes with Bush.) Sustaining a one
woman show for a continuous 1 1/2 hours is no
mean feat; well worth your extra cash. The air
conditioning wasn't bad either. Go and feel like a
real Austinite, even for just a night.
