One of the biggest film events of the century, Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi epic can finally be seen - for the first time in 83 years - as the director originally intended, with 25 minutes of previously "lost" footage.

It is the future, and humans are divided into two classes: the thinkers, who make plans (but don't know how things work) and the workers, who achieve goals (but don't have the vision). Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. In a chance encounter a young boy and girl, one from each class, fall in love. Maria, a working class prophet, gives hope to the city's workers. She predicts the coming of a savior, a savior who will mediate the differences between the social groups and give the city the start of new era. The other, Freder, is the wealthy son of the city's mastermind. But Maria is kidnapped by a crazy inventor, who wants to use her to give life to his robot. The robot is given Maria's physical appearance and, following orders from the crazy inventor and Freder's father, creates chaos among the working class. Freder and Maria must fight to stop the robot and its crazy inventor in order to achieve the goal of making Metropolis a harmonious place for all.
