This summer, the tribe of the Age of Aquarius will stand up, speak out, sit in and let their hair down in the counter culture of peace and understanding which gave birth to a movement that changed the world forever. The most celebrated and groundbreaking of all rock musicals, Hair mirrors the thoughts and feelings of a young and free-spirited generation in turmoil over the Vietnam War choosing to raise their voices in celebration of love, life and freedom. With some of the most rousing and soulful songs ever written including "Let the Sun Shine In," "Easy to be Hard," "Good Morning Starshine," "Aquarius" and the infectious title song. Hair takes a “trip” back to the days of beads-flowers-happiness but endures with powerful messages still relevant today.

One of the most enjoyable Austin productions in years. The show was lively and engaging once past the opening number and juvenile vulgarity. Robby Gibbons showed vocal range, flexibility and intensity from his opening number of “Donna” and subsequent numbers and the “tribe” did a wonderful job of backups and harmonies throughout the show. Glenn Hall did a fine job with his vocals though limited to a one-dimensional role as Claude. Kylie Baker offers a strong voice in an emotion-filled “Easy to Be Hard” and Kristen Bennet gave one of the most powerful singing performances of the night on “White Boys”. The show is truly an enjoyable experience with top notch vocals and dancing. Credit must go to the team of director Jeff Hinkle, musical director David Blackburn and choreographers for molding this talent into a synergistic, must-see musical. Too bad it’s not in a larger venue. And to the woman who brought her young daughter (7 or 8 years old) to the play, “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?”

With shows selling out left and right and not a single media review to speak of, City Theater's production of Hair, is one you don't want to wait until closing weekend to buy your tickets for. This production is so much fun! Filled with passion and vibrant energy, that word of mouth ALONE has sold out almost every performance so far!! The music is incredibly fun and powerful. As an audience member you are made to feel like you are part of the tribe, it's truly amazing! You will, laugh, you will cry,you will sing along! Bust out your tie-dye and buy your tickets now!!

exciting and well choreographed. Michelle
Alexander brought life to "Aquarius", Kylie
Baker did an emotional and believable "Easy
to be Hard", "Where do I Go" was tastefully
done,"Abie Baby" (is that the name of that
piece?) was stunning, and "Air" was spot on
perfect (wish I could remember the name of
the singer/actor). i wanted to hear more
from Meg Steiner who sang with others in
"Black Boys". Claude was hot but Berger was
hotter. Go see it, I think you'll REALLY enjoy
it.

Having seen Hair in London in 1971,
and then in Minneapolis in the 90s,
I was looking forward to see how
Austin does it. The performances
were very good all round. There
were a few excellent voices and
credit goes to Jeff, the sound
engineer, who kept the volume at
the right level so that the singing
was not rendered painful due to
distortion at high volume.
The story itself focuses on a time
that we are unlikely to see in the
near future; set in the era of
Vietnam and the DRAFT, the show
reveals the feelings of the young,
and tangentially how society mis-
perceived what they really were
saying - our leaders would have
been wise to pay more attention. We
are unlikely to see the kind of
protests portrayed in the play
until the USA decides to take over
the world and the DRAFT returns.
In conclusion, I take my hat off to
the performers (who took off more
than than their hats)- a fine
performance in an intimate setting.
Great job City Theater.

It has taken me since the late 1960's to finally get to see a production of Hair! I am glad I did. The production at City Theater was great. I could see that it was really a complex production with choreography, music onstage, and many, many musical numbers. Also, the actors and actresses had to give the audience that certain feeling of love, peace, flowers, and being spaced out. They did it. I put the flower that I was given in water when I came back home. What was so interesting as well, is that I realized that at least four musical numbers became prominent hits that have endured for this length of time, all coming from this show.
The feelings came through, and even though I didn't avail myself of the opportunity to actually be a hippie when I had the chance, I certainly knew the prevailing feeling, and this play definitely captured those turbulent times, with the Vietnamese war going on, my male friends worried about the draft, and people trying to figure out what to do.

Hair at City Theatre was a wonderful nostalgic trip back to the sixties.
The stress and constraints of the draft, the anguished parents, the thankless loss of life, the desire to experience love and be carefree are portrayed with balanced seriousness, humor and with ebullient energy of the cast who are enjoying being part of Austin’s vibrant creative community. It is well worth seeing.
