Quick-tongued, lively, fast-paced Moliere at his best. A merry-go-round of misplaced desires and hidden agendas in this fresh new take on skewering of the health care crisis. In this hilarious satire on the world of medicine the the wealthy, yet housebound hypochondriac Argan has every disease in the book and will go to any length to marry his daughter off to a doctor, Of course, she has other ideas. Lurking around are quacks only too happy to (mis)treat him, a money-grubbing wife and servants longing to carry on his miseries. A narcotic cocktail of romantic triangles, double entendres and mistaken identities ensues, promising to leave you gasping, giggling and possibly…in stitches. Directed by Karen Sneed and featuring Richard Craig, Suzanne Balling, Alexandra Russo, Mick D’Arcy, Laura Cannon, Scot Friedman, and Kirk Kelso.

      The City Theater certainly took on the enormous challenge of mounting a Moliere play with about as much gusto as they could muster. While this may not have been a flawless production, largely because of the lack of energy or sharp timing required for the absurdity on stage, there were some exceptionally standout performances provided by Suzanne Balling, Scot Friedman and Mario Silva which had me wishing they would never leave the stage!       The play is a wild ride – totally in the spirit of Molliere – part farce and part comedy del arte. The scene is imaginative and the costumes are at times surprising. The cast has an interesting synergy and seems to enjoy what they are doing. Richard Craig (Argan) Suzanne Balling (Toinette) deserve special mention. Another winner for the City Theater. If you like a good laugh – don’t miss this show. Collapse

      It’s what you’d expect from Moliere’s most lively and entertaining of comedies. And City Theatre delivers. A terrific evening of outrageous characters, colorful costumes and great music that was thoroughly enjoyed by a full house the night I attended. And such a fine ensemble of actors led by Richard Craig, Suzanne Balling, Scot Friedman and Alexandra Russo. If it’s great comedy you want, done in a cool space – figuratively and literally – go and see Imaginary Invalid. You will enjoy the heck out of it! Collapse

      The results of updating classic plays can range from enhancing the script to weighing it down badly. Luckily, the City Theatre's production of Imaginary Invalid is an example of the former. Not that Moliere is irrelevant today, but as a writer he's just not perceived as timeless or influential as some others, so modern audiences may have trouble accessing his work. In a nutshell, Imaginary Invalid is about a highly diseased man who is trying to get his daughter to marry a doctor. This production gives that story a modern twist, with alternative medicine charlatans, big advertising, and the sticky issue of health care reform. At one point, Suzanne Balling poses as Hillary Clinton (a role I honestly hope she takes on someday). In addition, the original song numbers generally work very well with Moliere's text, and the musically-inclined cast. Imaginary Invalid has a good mix of City Theatre veterans and newcomers, and they all work together to make an enjoyable summer production. Collapse

      If you're looking for a laugh-out-loud comedy that's certain to entertain, look no further than the Imaginary Invalid at City Theatre! It's the perfect way to spend a summer evening! I've never been disappointed by any of the shows I've seen at the City Theatre, but this is definitely one of my favorites. I liked it so much the first time, I had to see it again! Collapse

      I knew the basic story but did not know what to expect when I attended The Imaginary Invalid. I had a great time, laughed out LOUD many times and was blown away by the actors and the costumes.... Expand

      I knew the basic story but did not know what to expect when I attended The Imaginary Invalid. I had a great time, laughed out LOUD many times and was blown away by the actors and the costumes. Scot Friedman and Suzanne Balling are standouts in a fine fine cast. If you are in the Health Care profession be warned, this show is gunning for you (in the most humorous way possible). Act II is where the fun reaches a fever pitch, the payoff is big! Go see it. Collapse

A terrific evening of outrageous characters, colorful costumes and great music that was thoroughly enjoyed by a full house the night I attended.
