This summer, VORTEX’s 20th annual Summer Youth Theatre presents The Physicists, a dark comedy written in 1961 by Swiss playwright, Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Three mad scientists--Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Johann Wilhelm Möbius--hold court in an insane asylum atop the Swiss Alps. As nurses begin turning up dead,a police inspector and a venerated psychiatrist join forces to find the cause.Is it the ghost of King Solomon? Is it Möbius's revolutionary theory, the Principle of Universal Discovery? Or is it the simple truth that what has been thought can never be unthought? Written under the threat of nuclear war and now produced in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, The Physicists provides an opportunity for the students of SYT to tackle science, politics, and ethics while telling a story that will make audiences laugh out loud before it chills them to the bone.

      This was my very first time seeing Vortex's Summer Youth Theatre production and I was quite impressed with the production. The youth performers were top notch! I especially loved the performances of... Expand

      This was my very first time seeing Vortex's Summer Youth Theatre production and I was quite impressed with the production. The youth performers were top notch! I especially loved the performances of Cassidy Timms' as Einstein, Xander Slay-Tamkin as Mobius and Joshua Michael Braun as Newton. All three when on stage make quite a trio in this humorous production. Each character is more than they seem and these fine young performers did a great job in slowly revealing each layer as the play goes on. This production, with its incredible cast and crew is a perfect example of why the Summer Youth Theatre Program has been going on for 20 years. Collapse

      The Physicists is a satirical black comedy well performed by the Summer Youth Theatre. Set in the Alps in the repurposed mansion, now used as a sanatorium, the plot centers on Mobius, who is haunted... Expand

      The Physicists is a satirical black comedy well performed by the Summer Youth Theatre. Set in the Alps in the repurposed mansion, now used as a sanatorium, the plot centers on Mobius, who is haunted by visits from King Solomon, Beutler, who believes he is Sir Isaac Newton and Ernesti, who believes he is Albert Einstein. The drama unfolds with a police investigator wishing to question Einstein about a murder which has just taken place at the Sanatorium, the second in a short time. The Doktor Mathilde von Zahnd, who runs the establishment, is very protective of her patients. The plot is a complicated knot of double identities, good intentions gone bad, all battling to gain Mobius’ trust and his documentation. The twists and turns, guns and nuns, will keep the audience engaged and entertained to the end. The young actors were sincere and engaging, little hard to hear at times, but generally, the lines were well delivered. Congratulations to director and students on a job well done. Collapse

      Never a slow or dull moment on stage. The Summer Youth Theater put on a great show and really took their roles as mentally ill physicists in the Alps to heart.
