Two encore performances of TheTrash Project, a community-based performance by Forklift Danceworks thatpremiered in 2009. TheTrash Project is a magical, one-of-a-kind dance performance thatcelebrates City of Austin Solid Waste Services (SWS) employees while drawingattention to the inherent artistry and skill in their work.
On Sept. 12, 2009, arain-soaked audience gathered on the Austin Studios tarmac to witness The Trash Project—the culmination of ayear-long partnership between Forklift Danceworks and SWS. The Trash Project premiered to acapacity crowd of 2,000 people with at least 500 more turned away at the gate.The performance was named the #1 Arts Event of 2009 by The Austin American-Statesman, and it won four Austin Critics TableAwards, including Most Outstanding Dance Concert of 2009–2010. In addition,local filmmaker Andrew Garrison is making a documentary about the creation of The Trash Project entitled Trash Dance, which is slated to premierein Austin in the spring 2012.
