The Last Act Theatre Company will be staging an unforgettable night of adaptations from Edgar Allan Poe’s canon of enthrallingly visceral prose. LATco.’s Upon a Midnight Dreary will include Poe’s infamous The Conqueror Worm, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Tell Tale Heart. These uniquely chilling yarns will be dramatized in light of new relevance to today’s audience focusing on the most grotesque details of the human dilemma and examining the sanity of avoiding madness in an increasingly mad world.
We hope to offer every detail of this production as an opportunity to feature and celebrate Austin’s tenaciously thriving community of artists. Staged in the unique and intimate setting of La Peña Art Gallery in the heart of downtown Austin, Upon a Midnight Dreary promises to be a production unlike any other.

of the production was a little rough and
could have used a bit more rehearsal, but
overall I thought it was truly delightful.
Beauregard '72 was a brilliantly written black
comedy that had undertones of Schaffer's
Amadeus. The Tell-Tale Heart adaptation was
suspenseful, but perhaps a bit more
appropriate for a short film. I would love to
see more work from Last Act as it's made up
of some of Austin's most talented actors. A
great spooky evening.

The Last Act Theatre Company's Upon a Midnight Dreary was composed of three, unrelated, modernized pieces by Poe. My favorite piece of these three was The Barrel of Beauregard Vintage '72, an adaptation of The Cask of Amontillado. I loved watching the sarcastically comical and dark character Jack and his desire for revenge against a friend who had sorely wronged him. The only downside to this piece was that I thought some of the transitions could have been clearer and that the Bartender could have used more energy in her dialogue. I must mention the other large work, The Tell Tale Heart, because the use of sound was excellent! It allowed the audience to hear what the main character was "hearing;" it made me feel like I was accompanying her on her journey into madness, which in turn intensified my empathy for her. This was by far the creepiest and most disturbing piece. Overall, I quite enjoyed this performance!

Pros: Has the feeling of watching a Poe story, Cons: Some areas seem like they need more practice, Unexpected: NOT the original stories. Yes, these are NOT the original stories translated into a play, but rather stories BASED on the originals with similar structure and theme only slightly... different. Now, that being said, they're not bad and actually feel like original Poe stories, but Poe is not something I often see done as a play and I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed that this group took liberties with Poe's material. 4-star rating because of muddled lines and flat acting (none of which came from the AMAZING main characters), sometimes muddled transitions, scenes that cause the audience to split focus at important times, tech that wasn't completely synced up, and monologues broken by interruptions from frozen characters onstage. Final verdict: while confusing and rough at times, the stories are solid and feel like Poe. The main actors make this a must see!!
