Move over Baltimore! Austin is the new home for Hairspray--the soultastic, hair hoppin’, dance-til-you-drop musical! Big girl Tracy Turnblad has big ideas about teasin’ to stratospheric hairdo heights while dancing on the Corny Collins TV record hop countdown, and instigating a change that’s gonna come. When this equality cutie starts back-combing and bee- bopping across the racial divide, the bigots can’t stop the beat. John Waters’ campy film Inspiration and ZACH Artistic Director Dave Steakley are a match made in ozone-depleting, the higher-the-hair-the- closer-to-God, Beehive heaven!

      There are so many things right about ZACH Theatre’s production of Hairspray that I can’t even figure out where to begin. When you walk into the intimate Kleberg stage, you realize that every seat is the best seat- although if you’re looking for more interaction with the characters, the front row is the way to go. At several points the actors made sure to engage the audience which always ended in a good laugh. The dynamics of the cast were incredible and the acting seemed so natural. The singing- I can’t even explain in words. The best way to prepare you for it is to tell you it was moving. Several numbers ended with fierce applause and Janis Stinson’s performance of “I Know Where I’ve Been” earned a standing ovation. Actors aside- props, costume, and set added to the performance. The wigs are certainly memorable (and have you thinking- how did they do that?). I can't express more how impressed I was with ZACH's production of Hairspray- it's just something you have to experience. Collapse

      As a huge fan of the original film, I had my doubts about the stage version, but I have to say, I was legitimately blown away by this performance. Brian Coughlin and Christine Tucker stole the show, but the entire cast were fantastic. There was an overwhelming sense of fun, you couldn't help but smile. I'm recommending it to everyone I know, and I'd see it again in a heartbeat! Bravo! Collapse

      I have yet to see a musical with such vibrance and spunk as ZACH's Hairspray. I have always clung to the John Water's classic, but the whole cast blew me away with their vocal and acting chops. Brooke... Expand

      I have yet to see a musical with such vibrance and spunk as ZACH's Hairspray. I have always clung to the John Water's classic, but the whole cast blew me away with their vocal and acting chops. Brooke Shapiro held her own as Tracy Turnblad, and Janis Stinson as Motormouth Maybelle brought the whole audience to their feet. In addition to this stellar cast,ZACH really impressed me with set design and costume/hair/makeup. Getting to see this musical live was an amazing experience, and I recommend for all types of theater goers. Collapse

      Such a fun show--I don't think anyone left the ZACH's Kieberg Stage tonight without a big goofy grin on their face. It's song, dance, and soul at it's best, and even if you're not a "musical theatre" type of person, you should still give it a shot. Dave Steakley's vision of this production is a bold, enthusiastic show pulsing with joy.A truly strong ensemble cast brings an uplifting whirlwind of a show to Austin, and trust me, if the audience is dancing by the finale, you KNOW it's got to be good. From the big hair to the big voices, seeing Hairspray is definitely an evening well spent! Collapse

      As a huge fan of the original film, I had my doubts about the stage version, but I have to say, I was legitimately blown away by this performance. Brian Coughlin and Christine Tucker stole the show, but the entire cast were fantastic. There was an overwhelming sense of fun, you couldn't help but smile.
