GLORY LAND Sacred Music from American Folk

Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the four women of Anonymous 4 combine historical scholarship with contemporary performance intuition to create their magical sound. Celebrating their 25th anniversary during the 2011-12 season, the ensemble has performed on major concert series and at festivals throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Enchanted both by their live performances and by their twenty-one recordings of medieval, contemporary, and American music, Anonymous 4’s listeners have bought nearly two million copies of the group’s albums on the harmonia mundi label.

      There is a legend that Pope Boniface VIII asked the artist Giotto to demonstrate his artistic skill, and in response the artist drew a perfect circle freehand. I have no idea of this story is true or... Expand

      There is a legend that Pope Boniface VIII asked the artist Giotto to demonstrate his artistic skill, and in response the artist drew a perfect circle freehand. I have no idea of this story is true or not, but Anonymous 4's singing is the musical equivalent of Giotto's perfect circle. I have long been a fan of Anonymous 4, having several of their recordings, and was thrilled to get the opportunity to get to see them live at Bates Recital Hall. The first half of their program consisted of selections from their CD "Secret Voices: Music from Los Huelgas," and the second half from their CD "American Angels." In all their songs, the four women demonstrated their dedication to and perfection of their craft. Much of the music had not been performed before they did so- at least not in a public concert setting. This was a one-night performance, so I cannot say to catch them in town, but I can urge anyone with a passing interest in vocal music to buy their recordings. You'll be glad you did. Collapse
