An international film crew begins recreating some of the early episodes of the Spanish conquests in the New World. Since there are no surviving Tainos whom Columbus first encountered in the Caribbean, then Quechua-speaking people of Cochabamba, Bolivia will have to suffice. But in the middle of the filming a real-life drama is unfolding as the people of Cochabamba struggle to regain their water rights from an international corporation. Daniel, the young man playing Hatuey, leader of an early rebellion against the conquistadores, also leads the community in the struggle for water. The film brilliantly interweaves parallels from the 16th and 21st centuries, showing how the exploitation continues – once for gold, now for water.

      The Austin Film Society always brings important, artistic films for screening. Even the Rain is no exception. It is layered, intelligent, and excellently cast and acted with professional actors and local people of Bolivia. A discovered nonactor, Juan Carlos Aduviri, is riviting. Much is happening in this movie. It fluidly moves between past and present in depicting imperialism and the pursuit of money whether it be gold by Columbus, art by the current day filmmakers, or water rights by a corporation (based on the Bolivian Water War in 2000). These are portrayed with epic scenes of the filming of the Columbus/native people saga, the behind the scenes happenings with the current day filmmakers and people of the city, and the uprising and escalating violence of the riots over the water. There are many powerful scenes throughout, which should not be described, but left for the film viewer to see and feel. Very enjoyable, thoughtful movie. Collapse

      Even the Rain is an incredibly moving, gripping story. Featuring Gael Garcia Bernal (from Motorcycle Diaries)as Sebastian, an ambitious filmmaker, Even the Rain is a movie within a movie. It follows Sebastian's efforts in Bolivia to make a movie about Columbus' conquest and exploitation of the natives. When the Bolivian government sells the water supply to a private company, the people see this as pure exploitation, and the surrounding turmoil has eerie parallels with the story Sebastian is telling, and threatens to derail the project. Caught in the midst of this is the fiery actor Daniel, who is a leader of the native resistance in the film, and is a natural leader in real-life in the demonstrations against the social injustice that he sees. Sebastian's determination to push his film through raises some disturbing ethical questions, such as whether his production is contributing to exploitation. If Even the Rain ever comes back, you owe it to yourself to see this. Collapse
