KGB analyst Sergei Gregoriev is disgusted with the Soviet state and begins passing vitally important secret papers to French agents, including a naïve French businessman unaccustomed to secrecy and espionage. Soon the lives of Pierre Froment and Sergei are inextricably bound together, and as the dangers of discovery and family dissent increase, so do the tensions mount. In the background are President Reagan, French President Mitterand, various Soviet leaders, and a rising Mikhail Gorbachev. This film, starring filmmakers in the two principal roles, is based on a little-known story of a real-life KGB spy who single-handedly uncovered the Soviet system of well-placed moles in various Western countries and thus set into motion the eventual collapse of the super-power.
