With the 3000 ads the typical American sees each day, sometimes it's hard to know the difference between what you need and what marketers want you to think you need. Is the best part of waking up really Folgers? Are you worth Maybelline? Where *is* the beef? To help sort it out, Sarah 7 presents Douchebags and Panty Liners—an improvisational comedy show riffing off of the commercials that infiltrate our lives-- Thursdays in May at ColdTowne Theater.
All-female group -- Sarah 7 -- will solicit audience suggestions based on a list of classic and contemporary television ads. After watching the selected advertisements with the audience, the cast will perform a long form improv show based on the themes and images from the advertisements, uncovering the message behind the message in the clips, and how the business of branding has evolved over the years since TV hit mainstream. After all, we've come a long way, baby. Or have we?
Cast member Elizabeth Brammer says, “Improv is a perfect venue for deconstruction advertisements, because advertising is about subtle manipulation and carefully created ideology, and improv is about exposing the truth in the moment in ways that regular life is too composed to do. The combination of the two genres exposes the absurdity of both the commercials and the perniciousness of their effect.”
The cast includes Elizabeth Brammer (Showdown), Jenny Carlson (Damned Avalanche), Cortnie Jones (Stool Pigeon) Teresa Kubos (ColdTowne Mainstage), Erika May-McNichol (The Frank Mills), Stephanie Russo (Le Sexy), and Katie Sicking (Stool Pigeon).
