Step into the imaginative playground of Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks for an extremely rare opportunity -- the first production of her new play directed by Ms. Parks herself! A South Texas family Suzan Lori Parksbreaks through familial borders when a young man named Snake returns home, lured by his stepmother Grace, to reunite with his father, a border patrol agent. The prodigal son confronts his father, and fences are erected as everyday life erupts into a battle for personal survival. At once fiercely intimate and explosive, this surprising and truly original play finds three people bound together by longing, passion and ambition.

I may be one of the only ones who had problems with this show. I never got involved with the characters and found the high presentational style leaving me not caring at all for the situation. The tension developed was very good, but generally I thought it was an over indulgent piece. However, I do note that the audience stood up immediately at the end so many found it much more entertaining than I did.

I was blown away by the performance of The Book
of Grace--the story is something that transcends
race, time period, or class status. Three intensely
talented performers light up ZACH's stage with the
regional premiere of this show and it is a play that
resounds with you far after you've left the theatre.
Exploring the shaky ground of abuse, parental
expectations, and the small roots of hope that are
planted within bruised hearts, The Book of Grace is
riveting theatre that can restore your soul.

Susan Lori-Parks' The Book of Grace was powerful
to say the least. The show explores the physical and internal boundaries that we build to protect ourselves. Set on a border town in Texas, with footage projections
from the US-Mexico fence itself, the play pushes
the audience to recognize the choice of
compartmentalizing problems or gracefully letting
them go and finding the silver lining.
The characters are well-defined, well-developed,
and despite having their own niche, they are not caricatures. Good show.

Intense! This compelling play tells the inner stories
of three generations in three different ways: oral
expression, written word and cyber posts. The
show explores the characters’ personal,
interpersonal and external boundaries. This
interplay is graphically depicted by the large images
of the Rio Grande Valley border wall on all sides of
the theater. This is a show about desire, belonging
and identity. While I did not follow the dialogue in
a couple of places, the actors make this show
intriguing. Each of their faces seem to tell a parallel
story to the spoken one, reflecting the richness of
the play.

The Book of Grace, authored by Pulitzer author Suzan-Lori Parks, debuted off-Broadway last year is now at the Zach Scott Theatre’s Whisenhunt Stage where Ms. Parks is directing its Austin run through July 10th.
Set within viewing distance of the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence, Ms. Parks has constructed an allegory, through the characters “Vet”, “Snake”, and Grace, about the conflict between setting/enforcing boundaries and the practice of patience, understanding and forgiveness (grace) that, in perfect application, may know no bounds. But, can grace survive "iron fists"?
The Border Fence is a background metaphor for this meditation, but this is not a play with a political statement, per se; it’s an exploration of our human struggle, in our heart and between our ears, with Go(o)d. It’s a call to each of us to be writing in our own Book of Grace.
Highly recommend. It's a Wow! The performances and direction are excellent; Eugene Lee as "Vet" is astounding
