On Saturday, September 10th, Wally Workman Gallery will open it's 8th solo show with watercolorist Jan Heaton. Heaton is known for her rich and lyrical watercolors inspired by nature. Drawn from a recent trip to the Italian countryside, this show is no exception. East of Tuscany and north of Rome, the quiet landscape of Umbria communicates a unique tranquility. J.M.W.Turner, one of the first watercolorists to influence Heaton as a young artist, painted on the hillside there. Heaton eagerly translated her impressions of the Umbrian countryside into paintings on cold pressed cotton paper, a paper handcrafted since 1267 in Fabriano, two hours from where she was staying. The details, colors and forms that inspired the series include old vines heavy with clusters of violet grapes, chalky alabaster cliffs dotting the valley beyond the vines, cerulean rippling streams moving silently through a maze of viridian green, purple-black olives in groves ready for harvest undulating over the hillside, and the indigo hues that dominate the famed pottery of Deruta. Through this show, Heaton interprets and shares the beauty and serenity she discovered in Umbria.
