Chel White's FEVER DREAMS/HEAVENLY NIGHTMARES

Only recently introduced to the works of Chel White, I have been amazed at the stylistic and thematic diversity in his films. Surreal, ethereal, wistful, and witty are some of the descriptions that come to mind. Mainly I just allow my imagination to be taken into his complex, mysterious worlds. So far, I have always been able to “come back,” but I’m sure I change slightly with each new viewing.
White describes his work: “… more and more I find myself drawn to stories and images that reside on the brink of dreams, or linger on the periphery of distorted memories.” For these explorations he often uses elemental images of water, fire, earth, and air – “I find using them is a kind of visual shorthand to the metaphysical."
Residing in Portland (which, some describe as Austin’s spiritual sister city), White often collaborates with writers, especially with noir-master author/radio artist Joe Frank, whose themes of “obsession, absurdity, love, and allegory” all appealed to White. He has also worked with poets Christine Toth and Scott Poole. Completing the visual component, Chel White often calls on the talents of various editors, actors, and animators. His is truly collaborative art without being movies by committee and focus groups.
